For your info, we don't cut our trees indiscriminately, 80% of our land is still under forest. Unlike our neighboring countries we don't clear our land to grow oil palm. The country has been trying to diversify its economy but by doing agriculture on large scale is not one of them, reason for this is that the land is largely infertile, although we have been trying to grow enough for domestic consumption. As for the oil, yes, definitely will run out sooner or later and by right we should have implemented contingency plans before that happens

Brunei didn't join Malaysia becauze of several disagreements over oil rights and seniority of the Sultan. The then Sultan, Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien still seemed to see joining Malaysia as a good idea so the Parti Rakyat Brunei(Brunei People's Party, the one which won the majority of votes) revolted in 1962(you were probably right if you thought of the Cold War). Malays don't really revolt unless there's a good reason to but the reasons the revolt was popular seem to have been lost to time.
The Parti Rakyat Brunei envisioned a Brunei with all its former territories(the ones colonized by Britain) returned. They were supported by Indonesia and lead by A.M Azahari.
After the revolt was quelled, elections were not held and the nation has been in emergency rule since.

Don'y get me wrong, Brunei isn't some nation ruined by war. Living in Brunei is very peaceful and the crime rates are reaally low. So it is an amazing place if you just want some peace(this is Darussalam after all) not a place you want to go to if you like partying in clubs or drinking alcohol in public.

Precisely, 95% oil, glad that you are not like so many people that likes to blame purely on politics instead of the single-industry nation for Venezuela's problem. The only difference between Brunei and Venezuela is 410k vs 31 million in population and that one play nicer with the western world.
