Avoid These Nvidia & AMD GPUs

Some AMD and Nvidia GPUs could be failing at record rates in the near future, so if you're in the market for a new GPU there are definitely some I would avoid buying right now, especially used. AMD seems to be having more issues with their Radeon GPUs than Nvidia, but both companies have created graphics cards which I think could be very risky to purchase used.

Would you buy a reference AMD GPU, or is it not worth the risk? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

I went the used gpu route and got a Msi 3080 for $550. The guy selling was detailed about the cards past use and I messaged him personally to get more of a feel. He was honest and sincere and took care of the card. If you do your research then the used market is very viable

I bought a 6700xt on sale for under $370 shipped. I have no plan to buy a ref.model due to the issues - and even in the past, the ref models had 'worse cooling' than other models, so ... avoiding is generally the norm. As for Nvidia, they are just greedy, so don't buy into them. A 2000 series card is more than enough for some 90% of gamers, let alone the 3000 series, and the 4000 is for essentially the top 2% of gamers. Don't buy into it, the games we play won't be needing them anytime soon.

This entire story reeks of BS...60+ dead cards ALL get sent to one German shop?? Ok...sounds like a hit piece to compound on AMD's 7900xtx cooler issue. AMD and Nvidia sell like 5x more GPUs in the U.S. Yet no issues among the cards here?? Telling people to not buy a card based on this story is stupid. If the cooler for the 6900xt was defective, it wouldn't take this long to kill GPUs.

Before anyone goes on a rant these could be ex-mining cards, a bad driver update, user error, any numerous amount of things. Put your digital pitchforks away until there's an official response from AMD. The original source of this news, didn't even say if these gpu's were new or used, seems sus. One of original sources was from a German repair shop that received a large quantity of these gpu's. (What I saw on my newsfeed before bed)

Appreciate your unique insight into this issue. You definitely make some valid points regarding the dies cracking. The interesting thing to me is the timing which they all started cracking. I think it could be a combination of drivers and loopholes in design.

so a guy in Germany receives about 40 to 80 faulty cards out of the thousands that were sold and all of sudden you have to avoid?? It looks to me like a farm just had enough and got rid of the cards and saying 80% is misleading AF, if all cards were failing it wouldn't just be Germany, it would be a worldwide phenomenon. It seems to me that some guy with money tried to do a farm and had no clue wtf he was doing.

When it comes to the 3090 if you replace the 3090 thermal pads, the temps stay way below TJ Max and is fine. I took the gamble on an ebay 3090 and has been running fine with no issues. Replaced thermal paste and all thermal pads and is running better than when it was stock.

You only have to worry if you live near this one shop because that's the only place this is happening to so it's not a driver issue because it's not a world wide issue only a single location it's happening at and many of those cards still have warranty.
So why didn't these people take there card to AMD and just get it replaced unless there was something manipulated with the cards or bios/driver it was using remember if it was a RX6000 driver then this would be happening over a month world wide but it's not it's only happening in one place from one shop.
My guess there miner cards that were either using a custom driver/bios and cooked the cards do to a mistake or inexperience and knew they couldn't use the warranty so they sent them to the nearest repair shop.

Bought a 3090. Guy put brand new thermal pads on all of the memory modules. Highest temp I’ve EVER seen was 77-78c. Don’t think mine is dying any time soon.

Anybody else notice the damage on that 6900xt vapour chamber where it touches the chip? Looks like it was prized off pretty aggressively.

I heard it was 6800/6900XT 's that used drivers 22.11.2 from the 7900XT, instead of the 6800/6900XT driver 22.11.2.

Your theory with the cracking has a crack. It would overheat and throttle. A driver fault could alter the voltage/wattage limits with sudden spikes in voltage and heat production...and grilling it self.

Just 48 genius who installed 7900 drivers on their 6000 cards, that's all

ok...at 2:50 that "defective" chip seems to have somehow managed to crack the cooling block. I'm having a hard time believing that a driver update will crack a GPU cooler...also, why has it only been this one sigle shop? I've not heard anything about this from any of the PC shops near me.

I think the AMD GPUs that failed were using the latest 7000 series ONLY Driver and not he proper 6000 series Driver that they should have been using.
