In this mini voice lesson, @RozetteSaaangs answers one of your questions… “What’s my voice type?“. While vocal categories like, “soprano, tenor, alto, bass” might matter in choir, you can sing most songs by customizing them to your own voice if you’re solo artist.

In my experience, just lowering the key as a low baritone/bass can sometimes make pop songs sound jokey or parodical. Some voice types are more suited to a level of agility that others simply can not possess. I get the overall point and I agree(full, nuanced discussion in a TikTok is a lot to ask...😂), but I also think it's good to know what's suited to you so you aren't reaching for things you'll never quite touch.

I was a soprano my whole life, but sang a traditionally alto song for my senior year solo and ensemble and killed it. The judge loved that I tweaked it a bit to my voice.

I agree, I’m 2nd soprano/alto. I love the song “Holy City” all high notes. I changed it up to fit my voice, I sing it completely different. Took me 6 months to get it where I wanted it, still making changes. Sang it a few times in front of a church crowd. First time a lady came up to me and she said “ I was thinking not this song again, but when you sang it I liked how you sang it. The second time I sang it the minister who is a very good song writer and singer said “I never heard that version before it was like you were telling a story “. Like I said what you are saying is true. I love to sing, I don’t have a lot of confidence. I had a total of 4 voice lessons when I was a teenager. Learned to breathe from my diaphragm. I still want to learn. I’m 60yrs and I’m glad you are here to help others! You are an inspiration to many people!!!!

It’s so important to find the key that works best for you when doing a cover of a song.

Omg! Thank you! I am an Alto in our Chruch Choir, however people kinda stigmatized around the idea that my voice type can be only around that even though songs can have various ranges in a song, Thank you for pointing this out, A new subcriber btw, Wishing you all the best and luck! ^-^

i got lucky in that my school chorus never had the band play with us so we could mess around the key as much as possible. we were also advanced chorus so we only had 3 basses, 1 tenor, 4 altos, and 6 sopranos 😅

Hmm, I was thinking perhaps people are asking what actual type of voice they have, as in Lyric, Coloratura, Mezzo, etc. Not the part you would sing in a choir.

Yeah there's nothing wrong with trying to assign yourself a vocal fach as a contemporary singer just for fun, but it doesn't matter quite as much as it does for opera singers. If you're a contemporary singer, don't focus THAT much on which type of voice you have.

I've allways wondering when a teacher say that the voice types does not matter, and even more when they say "you can sing in your key" after that.

Why learn to sing if i just can sing the songs 2 octaves lower?, (not tryng to mess or anything, i just wanna know)
