It’s Framing 101 with Norm Abram teaching the apprentices.

#ThisOldHouse #AskTOH

Kevin O'Connor arrives at the house and takes a walk through the new addition. Upstairs he finds the apprentices, Bailey, Austin and Nathan learning how to frame an interior wall in the master bedroom suite with Norm Abram. They measure for the top and bottom plates. Then they cut and nail in the studs to the plates. Finally, they stand up the wall and tack it in place.

We haven't seen Norm in a while. It's always good to see Norm. I wish he could do a few more New Yankee Workshops, too.

Always love it when you roll out the 'Master', whether it is Norm or Tommy.

Good to see Norm again. Those 3 are lucky to get him to teach them about wall framing.

I remember the original This Old House episode. The house was an old Victorian in Dorchester. Aired on WPBS in Boston. I was taking an architectural drafting class in high school at the time. Norm is one of the best. I wish his Yankee Craftsman show would come back on ....

Honestly, the overall tenacity they use to construct this magnificent wall in this house is astounding. I’m truly in awe of how fast and efficient that was!

Thank you This Old House. I like the smooth approach used here. But if someone is adding a wall to an old house, beware! Old houses rarely have the uniform height between floor and ceiling as this new construction has. In my experience, each stud will need to be a few fractions of an inch longer or shorter than the stud next to it. Anyone working on an old house may be better off attaching the top and bottom sill to the ceiling and floor, then measure and fill in the framing in between.

It is so sad to see this episode again now knowing that Austin passed away. He was such a promising prospect as a tradesman and a welcomed addition to the show. Adding the apprentice dynamic to the show added new life to the format. Continued success to Bailey and Nathan, who has now joined the show full-time, on their construction trade journeys.

1:58 Simple yet brilliant tip on flipping top/bottom plate on top of each other on the floor before they are even nailed to determine the total length/height of the wall studs.

Happy to see Norm. Been watching TOH since the beginning and he was always the mainstay. I love all you guys but Norm Abram is the Vince Lombardi of Carpentry!

a better way to check wood straightness is to keep it on the pile of lumber and turn over one side at a time. this way you check trueness against the stack which is fairly straight. much easier to see the bow or hump against a straight board while lying on the board. nice tip with the template norm. thanks.
