Archaeologists in Turkey have discovered what they believe is the largest underground city in the world to date. The ancient underground city which includes a sanctuary, storage areas, water wells and passages with tunnels is located in the Midyat district of the Mardin province, in southeastern Turkey. The underground city, which has been called Matiate (meaning ‘city of caves’), was discovered accidentally during the cleaning and conservation of historical streets and houses in Midyat. In a project that started in 2019, workers were cleaning a cave when they discovered a passage. Excavation work then revealed a multitude of rooms and other tunnels leading from it, as well artifacts and wall murals.

This is interesting to me that this site in Midyat, is over 500 miles from Derinkuyu. Were they hiding from the Sea People, or were they hiding from a chaotic sun?

I'm so curious about these underground cities. How long did it take to make them? What did they do with the material they removed? What kind of tools are needed to build something this big out of rock and stone? Did they work on it in preparation like a doomsday shelter? They couldn't possibly fit everyone in a just cave then worked on expansion. What were they hiding from? If people then the air holes just needed to be blocked. Was it a natural disaster of the sun, volcano? It drives me nuts not knowing. I have so many more questions. I truly hope I can visit because standing in there will be like being part of a very interesting strange time in history.

Excellent. Curious how and where they would grow food in an underground city such as this. Thanks for sharing this.

Question, how did the provide lighting ? In the few pictures even along the passages the were no smoke smudges from the flames of the torches . And as for hiding a city of 20, 000 people, let alone 70, 000, food ……. The amount of food that is necessary can not be hidden let alone be secured .
