The reason why Russia sold Alaska is because at that time Russia was at war and they really didn't have enough to buy more guns so they looked at Alaska and they saw useless piece of land. Few years after Russia sold it gold was found.

Buffalo NY gets 94 inches of snow a year, Syracuse NY gets 127! Anchorage doesn't have shit on the Siberian horrors of upstate New York

ok but consider: Ohio is *so* bad that it produces as truly disproportionate amount of America's astronauts as Ohioans desperately attempt to flee the earth itself

Fun fact: when Secretary of State William H. Seward negotiated the purchase of Alaska in 1867, he was derided by some politicians and the press. The purchase was described as "Seward's icebox". Oil wasn't a thing yet, and many thought it was a barren piece of land with no value. Now, the Alaska purchase is considered to be the only good thing accomplished by Andrew Johnson's administration.

If he's this mad about the Alaska purchase wait till he reads about the Louisiana purchase, super cheap and we got the best river system in the world that enabled our Industrial Revolution

I Actually did a MyHeritage DNA test, and I was legit surprised as a born and bred proud Belgian, to find I am 30% Scandinavian despite having no known relatives or heritage from there,
but worst of all, my ethnicity traces back being English.

it's so over for me isn't it?

Alaska was sold for simple reasons:

1. It was not well explored. Therefore, under Russia, neither gold nor oil had been discovered there yet. The basis of what Alaska could bring at that time was furs, and even that was not enough to recoup the costs of developing this region. In fact, it was just a piece of glacier, some trees and stone. Everything that Alaska brought, the rest of Russia easily brought. However, the costs of logistics were incomparable with what was extracted.

2. People simply did not want to move there, in fact, Alaska is the same as Russia in climate and nature, why would people leave their city/village with the same terrain where they already live and just move to the same and start all over again, and where there is much less of everything and no people they know? Plus, after the military actions, Russia needed to restore the economy, it did not have time to build new cities and industry somewhere far overseas

3. And now the main reason that unites all of the above. Logistics. One of the main reasons for the sale was the location of these lands. All of Siberia had not even been developed yet, even today it takes a long time to get to the other end of Russia by train. At that time, it was even longer and even more difficult. Delivery of products, food, weapons, soldiers. The main industry and agriculture of Russia, both then and now, are concentrated in its western part, where most of the population lives. All this required a colossal amount of money, while Alaska itself did not bring money yet because it was poorly studied and sparsely populated. Russia was afraid of new conflicts, especially with Britain, so it felt the vulnerability of this land, so it was sold. For Russia, this was just another Siberia, but overseas, empty, cold and even strategically disadvantageous in the fight against Britain.

You wanna know why Alaska was sold to America and not Canada, it's because The Russian Federation did NOT want the UK having a strategic advantage over them which is absolutely hilarious given the events that came after
