The word catholic comes from the Greek meaning ”through the whole, ” that is “universal, ” “worldwide, ” “all inclusive.”
The first Biblical reference to the word is found in Acts 9:31 when speaking about “the church throughout [all] Judea, Galilee, and Samaria…”. The words “throughout” and “all” are καθ (κατά) and ὅλης (ὅλος) respectively in Greek, which together come to form the word καθολικός (katholikos) meaning  "universal", and in English is catholic. 
The first written record of the Church being called Catholic was 107 AD by St. Ignatius of Antioch (St. John taught him, friend, and St. Peter ordained him) and as a child, as per tradition, sat upon Jesus's lap in the Gospel when Jesus blessed the children. ❤
P.S. Before things were written they were already taught orally.

What concerns with this argument is; let’s for the sake of my illustration say that the Catholic Church just started to believe in Mormon teaches over time; let’s say over 1600 years and this new Mormon teaching was an accretion created slowly over the 1600 years. Is that Catholic Church the same church that the Apostles help build? No; it is a heretical church.

Now; I do not believe the Catholic Church is heretical; but I wanted to use an intense example to show you that the Catholic Church of 2024 might not be the same Catholic Church at the 2nd century.

I believe we have good reason to believe that the Catholic Church has changed.

And yet one would not say that the Universal Church of Christ and the institution of the Catholic Church are one and the same? The institution was made only 300 years later, after Christ’s death and resurrection, while the early church existed before. And they added onto and changed their doctrine, and this was abused for political purposes.

When we Protestants speak of the Catholic Church, we speak of the institution, not the entire church before the great schism.

“Roman Catholic“ is not Catholic as in universal. The one holy Catholic and apostolic church is the Eastern Orthodox Church in line with all 7 (8) ecumenical councils and inline with the Teachings of the Church Fathers. Christianity has nothing to do with any organized religion. Catholicism, Baptist, Mormonism, etc… It is about a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. A Christian is a person who follows the teachings of Christ by living them. They were called Christians first in Antioch.
