Imagine how far they would have gotten if every general under the sun didn’t try to seize power after one successful campaign.

The Roman Empire was divided into four because of the increasing size of the empire and the difficulty in governing it from one central location. The division of the empire allowed for more effective governance and also helped to prevent civil wars.

Because inevitably someone would be left out of the succession. Even with two Augustus and two Caesars. This is were Constantine comes in. His father Constantius was a Caesar. And was very popular with his troops in York. He died those troops proclaimed Constantine. The other emperors didn't recognize him and there's your civil war again. Constantine won and yes Diocletian did retired to grow cabbages.

Ironically the tetrarchy would have been an excellent way to handle military forces, not the State. If the empire would have been left entire and instead the military high command would have seen four different regional commands, things for Roman's would have been far way better.
Modern day military have similar ways to handle different theaters of operations.

When I was learning about the Roman Empire in my architecture class my teacher gave us a history lesson about Diocletian. She said that Diocletian was smart, perhaps too smart for his own good. She said that he knew that the Roman Empire was too big for one person to control so he established a tetrarchy instead. This I knew but I didn’t know that Diocletian retired from being Emperor. It’s badass because Roman Emperors usually hang on to their power which means that some other guy will probably stab him in the back to succeed him. People usually die in this business, but not him.

Basically they were over their governing capacity wich gived them a lot of debuffs

Imagine how far Rome would have gotten if they industrialized. Just logistics alone would have made managing this empire incredibly easy. Even with bad politics.

Has anyone ever noticed that the year of the four emperors, five emperors, and six emperors, are all in order? Lol it’s like the Romans planned this.

I once watched a documentary about the largest chimp colony ever found that eventually became too large, chimps wouldnt reconize eachother and broke into 2 colonies, kinda reminds me of that but on a grander scale

The fact that the leader could retire shows us how advanced of a society they lived in. In most places the leader retired when he died back then lol

It seems that the emperrorship was such a dangerous job, only one man could finish the admittedly short but mandatory number of days on duty to be able to get retired.

And we wonder how the mafia got their hierarchy.

Imagine the GREATNESS you could have achieved if you had just worked together and didn't stab each other in the back. The WORLD could have been yours! Imagine the legions of Rome marching in Europe, Asia, and the Americas all at once! Why could you not see the possibilities...

It was AURELIAN who basically solved the crisis by reconquering the two breakaway "empires" of Gaul and Palmayra.

I would've split Rome into 3-4 as Emperor:
● *Rome Europa*
● *Rome Arabia*
● *Rome Africa*
○ *Rome Britannia*
+ Roman Brittany + Roman Normandy + Roman Hauts-de-France

(NOTE: I'd totally keep Rome Europa, but if I had to give up more land, Rome Britannia it is, & if need be Roman Brittany +Roman Normandy + Roman Hauts-de-France it is!)

Fun fact : the recapture of rome happened 60 years after its fall so someone could have witnessed its fall and its recapture

It broke into civil war again after Constantine because his dynasty really liked slaughtering their own kin.

Because each emperor didn't have the intelligence to run the empire.
It was to involve and they wanted to party
