I once accidentally missed scanning a chocolate bar that had slipped into a side pocket in my bag. Upon reaching the car, I realised and went back to the desk to pay for it. The lady was surprised.

I one time did this. I scanned all my items and straight up forgot to pay and just walked out and then one of the employees yelled for me to come back and I was mortified. Everything was good, but it’s scared the crap out of me.

I once had the cops called on me at walmart for "forgetting to scan" something that wasn't even in my cart. They said I stole a car battery charger. When the cops came they tried to say that I had hid the item. When it went to court I asked the judge to have them show video proof of me in the automotive section on that day. They claimed they couldn't locate the video (because I never was in that section on that day) and so the charges were dropped. I filed a lawsuit against walmart and they settled. One of the conditions of the settlement was that the employee who falsely accused me be fired. They were. I stopped going to walmart for a long time after that. I've only gone back maybe twice in the past 12 years out of necessity. To this day it feels good knowing that not one penny of the money I won from this was spent in their store.

If you go to scan 10+ items in the self checkout and forget/miss scanning one $3 item, no store employee/owner, however unreasonable they may be, would ever conclude that you are stealing, nor would they call the cops for that. The store already made a profit even if you didn't pay for one lousy item.

I've worked retail. If the stock is within 2% of the expected value, no higher-up would be dumb enough to make a deal out of it and start checking the cameras like a lifeless lunatic.

If you weigh an item under an incorrect label, you are just as likely to pay MORE at the end than pay less, so the store's profits even out at the end, making them not care about that either (barring obvious PS5 fraud attempts).

Being arrested is as good as being convicted when your mugshot becomes public the day after your arrest. You will forever show up as a mug shot when someone searches your name.

The Purpose of self-checkouts is throw all liability on to the customers and obviously trying to save cost on staff.
