Here are three exercises that will increase your kicking power, so you can kick like Mirko Crocop! Taught by Shane Fazen and Kwonkicker, we show you our favorited exercises that we do to get our kicks harder. The muscles used to throw a kick are the abs, lower back, hips, hamstrings, quads, calves, and even muscles in the arms and upperbody. These exercises focus on strengthening the fast-twitch muscle fibers, with plyometric movements.

Hey Shane/anyone else reading this! I might as well mention, in my experience doing jumping kicks (especially for roundhouses) really helps you develop that explosive hip twist, since you can't just rely on the momentum of the leg. Would not recommend in a real fight, but a great training tool!

Imo, if you want to do this and not risk injury, these are the things to keep in mind: First off, if you can't squat with perfect form to depth with added weight (and obviously no pain), then you should not even think about doing jump squats. Secondly, don't do the plyo leg extensions. Normal leg extensions have a reputation for causing knee pain (for good reason), and doing them in a plyometric style is only going to make things worse. Use the replacement exercise instead. Also remember to include posterior chain exercises, as being too quad dominant is an imbalance which can also contribute to injury.

Don't leg extensions, especially explosive ones, pose a serious danger to your knees?

doing ballistics like that with the leg extension can and will eventually cause you an injury. i see it happen all the time. your ligaments and tendons are not designed to handle such stress in a restricted plain of motion even with light weight. its like quickly stretching a rubber band, at one point it will snap. other two exercises are great however.

Beginner question here:

Does the shin pain eventually go away from kicking or is it one of those things you just train your mind to adapt to?

For more power in your kick turn your front foot to the outside as far as it will go, then throw your kick. As oppose to rotating your front foot as you kick. Also note that when trying to kick with speed your also trying to bring your leg back to your stance as quickly as possible. Always assume that your opponent is looking to counter after you throw.
