Interested in resolving depression and anxiety naturally?

Are you questioning whether you need to take l-tyrosine and 5-htp together? Some people are saying that if you take 5 htp for depression, that you’ll make your symptoms worse if you don’t take 5-htp and tyrosine (5-htp l tyrosine).

In this video Dr Janelle talks about how dopamine and serotonin are made in the body, serotonin deficiency and dopamine deficiency symptoms. She discusses the impact of taking l tyrosine for depression and 5-htp for depression, on their own and together. Tyrosine supplements can increase the activity of the AAAD enzyme and led to reduced serotonin levels. This doesn’t happen with tyrosine rich foods.

Near the end of the video 5-htp dosage for depression (5-htp for depression dosage) and tyrosine dosage for depression are discussed.

I'm doing 5HTP and Tyrosine every night along with L-Theanine and some GABA lozenges too. These 4 really synergize quite well together. I've noticed much better sleep and a lot less depression and anxiety during the day as well.

It's probably good practice for psychiatrists to test their patients for low serotonin and dopamine levels and prescribe them nootropics(5htp, l tyrosine, l theanine, st johns wort, etc.) instead of man-made medicines that have really bad side-effects and withdrawals.

Thanks for this! I stopped with my ADHD meds and am now taking tyrosine (650 mg), vitamin B complex and omega 3 in the morning and 5htp (100mg) at night. Perfect combo!

I really appreciate how thoroughly implemented delivered this information is. There are so many less informed not professional you tubers talking about nootropics and though it’s good to get the word out it’s nice to hear from someone that has more than 3 months experience! I’m definitely subscribing thank you for sharing information about this things in a trustworthy coherent way.

Interesting video, my husband was diagnosed 4 years ago with FTD and he has had insomnia chronically and foggy headedness during the daytime. I started him on 5htp and he has improved significantly with better sleep and increased energy and the brain dig has cleared completely! Interesting also his chronic sinusitis has resolved and he can smell again for the first time in decades. Don't know if it is curative but it sure has improved his quality of life!

I take both and it's been a miracle. I tried every variety of antidepressant for years and they never improved anything.

I prefer to go one step above and take tryptophan personally. Study symptoms individually and put it in one camp or the other. If you are serotonin deficient, then take either tryptophan or 5-htp. If you are dopamine deficient, take tyrosine. Don't take one JUST because you are taking the other. Treatment must be symptom based.

That being said, one will brake and accelerate the other. You are aiming for a balance but you also need to be taking BOTH amino acids in through your diet anyway or in supplement form.

You can't put one into the body and starve it of the other one.

Keep in mind, tyrosine+iodine+selenium is needed for healthy thyroid function. Dopamine deficiency can make you tired but so can an underactive thyroid due to lack of tyrosine/iodine.

If you are switched on enough, you can actually tell what chemical your brain is seeking.

Also, beware of sugar foods. These provide a quick hit of brain chemicals so if you are constantly snacking on them. It can be a sign that you are completely amino acid starved. Throw that in with a bad thyroid and it's a recipe for huge weight gain.

Don't forget, tyrosine in particular can affect heart health and blood pressure as well.

If in doubt, take them individually, the uptake through your body might be so rapid due to being starved of an amino acid for so long you can experience all sorts of symptoms. In cases like these, take 10-20% of the recommended dose.

If the effects then work out to be beneficial to you then just take as required. It's like swimming. You'll soon learn how to ride the waves.

As a dopamine deficient individual i supplement with L tyrosine or L phenylalanine. I only use small amounts of tryptophan from time time when i get sudden and unusual sugar cravings. This is the trigger that my serotonin levels are too low. However if i take 5 htp or tryptophan alone then my depression gets so much worse. It takes a lot of time and experimentation to know what works for you

Thank you for this info! The internet is overwhelmed with this idea of needing the two together. I personally think I need both, especially after trying L-tyrosine 1 week into starting 5htp. Your guideline recommendations are spot on. I made the mistake day 1 of trying L-tyrosine with 5htp at night and my sleep was not great, as you mentioned might happen.

I just saw a video on being serotonin dominant... and believe I fit the bill. I also suspect, I'm dopamine deficient... I'm ADHD. Adderall was overkill, and quickly became inefficient, destructive to the clarity of thinking.

At one time I took an SSRI for depression, and it made everything worse... extremely so... intense adhedonia, no joy, even at things that gave me joy in the past.

In my youth, drugs and alcohol did a wonderful thing to lift my mood, increase motivation, and even helping this ADHD guy focus, intensely.

I'd rather not get my dopamine from drugs and alcohol.... I need to find a less harmful and healthy way to do so.

I will give L-Tyrosine a shot. Thank you.

Thank you for the excellent explanations of how these supplements get converted into neurotransmitters and how and when to combine them. I'm recovering from Long Covid and have been struggling with PTSD, depression and anhedonia. I've tried 5HTP on it's own and plan to try adding l-tyrosine.

I'm sorry what is 1:10 ratio? I couldn't understand that part. Like the dosage of L Tyrosine should be 10x higher than 5 HTP? Can someone please clarify?
