I still say it was a major error in writing Maul defeating Qui Gon. I really don't think Maul should have been able to beat someone who was essentially a Jedi Master. I guess the way it's written is that Qui Gon wasn't really a combat oriented Jedi at all, let alone a combat specialized master (Jedi have tons of different specializations, like Consular, Sentinel, Guardian, Something like a scribe but I can't remember the name, and then stuff like Battle Master/Weapon Master; that's just the well known/modern day career pursuits, it's likely there were many more combat specs to pursue back through the history of the order, especially during war times) so him fighting a sith assassin (again, I don't think Maul was an assassin anyway, he seemed more like a warrior or marauder, those are some sith specializations) wasn't gonna be super easy, but overall, Maul was basically the equivalent to like a Padawan or very new Jedi knight, so to me, it seems more realistic that he should have had to pull some kind of trickery out of his hat to beat Qui Gon. It would have emphasized the power of force users in general.
