Nestled in the UNESCO Amsterdam Canal District World Heritage Site, this 15.8 micro-apartment was comprehensively transformed by Studio Piet Boon. Studio Piet Boon's design approach creates a great sense of luxury by incorporating as many (hidden) functionalities as possible, and while historical features such as the original beam work have been preserved and featured, the use of rich materials throughout delivers a stylish Amsterdam base for her client.

Pied-à-terre is a small living unit, e.g., apartment or condominium, usually located in a large city some distance away from an individual's primary residence.

As an architect, I can appreciate the criticisms of this being too much like a hotel room. However, with such a small amount of space to work with, in addition to the client's very specific brief I think Renee did the best she could with such a difficult space. There's a reason hotel rooms have this layout and it's for efficiency - when you have 15.8sqm(!) there's little else that can be moved around without compromising other aspects of the room.

As much as a folding bed may have opened up the space (among other possibilities) if your client specifically wants to have a large bed as a permanent fixture you can argue your point but ultimately it's their place, so their decision. You just have to accept it, work with it and own your final design.

This is a great space if you're single, a light packer, and don't like entertaining. A lot of people are complaining that it's like a hotel room or a bedroom, but I think that's exactly what their client was after: a bedroom away from home when they're in the city. Nothing wrong with that if you're not planning on keeping a lot of belongings there or having anyone over.

its a shame they couldnt get a bigger bed in there, there was still some room to walk

People need to understand that this apartment is only for sleeping, not for living. Seems like the owner has to visit Amsterdam often but doesn’t life there.

I live in a 21sqm apartment with an almost identical layout (just remove the lounge sofa and add a table + 6sqm). I admit this looks cramped and is definitely designed as a hotel room... But I am kind of amazed that people go on about how "you can't live in a space like that". Looking at my own apartment I have everything I need from a large home. Shower, toilet, kitchen, dining-room bedroom, living room, office, wardrobe, even luxuries like a VR-playroom, Gym etc. How? well my office desk that double acts as a pull out dining table (6-8 people). My bed serve as my lounge area (I have no sofa, don't need one, the bed is very comfortable), in front of the bed I have a TV with wall mounted cupboards above and below and a wardrobe on the side (tons of storage) . I can tuck away my bed and the table. Allowing for a 12sqm usable space for anything I see fit. I can do yoga, gymnastics and play VR games in a 12sqm open space. The apartment can really be adapted to any occasion. My total living cost is 140EUR/month. Living in Sweden I am basically financially independent at the age of 35. Something I would never be in a large home with dedicated rooms and a tons of space.

Her client is the cat by the window. He’s very pleased with how everything was INTEGRATED

To be honest, that woman on the wall kind of freaks me out...I can't imagine how terrifying it would be to wake up from a nightmare, being glad that it's over, and find her staring at me...OMG

When there is a wine cooler but not a fridge you know it isn't an apartment, just a bedroom with a small ensuite.

I don’t know why, but I thought that was a real cat for a whole minute.

Don't get me wrong, I really like the whole design. It's just that, I'm actually waiting for the cat to move

I personally love it! I could see myself curling up on that window seat with a cup of coffee in the mornings. And snuggling into that luxurious bed at the end of a long day exploring Amsterdam. ❤

I'm sure the client had their reasons, though it does feel rather cramped. But regardless of how the space was distributed, the onyx niche for some reason looks so unreal. Maybe it's the material, maybe it's the lighting. But it just looks really good. The integrated tech controls is a cool touch too. Though the window seat is the real highlight tbh. Especially in a space that small.

What a great use of such a small space. They have provided storage, a kitchen and a bathroom, and a beautifully warm and serene ambience in such a small space. Most hotel rooms are 25sqm and larger… this apartment is only 15.8sqm, yet it is very welcoming and warm. Impressive. And it def looks luxurious.

That onyx kitchenette is TO DIE FOR. Spaces like this apartment share the same principals as Tiny House design - when you are designing and finishing such small spaces, you can reserve a larger percentage of the budget for luxurious indulgences that elevate the tactile and aesthetic experience of the space. Cladding a standard sized kitchen in onyx would be ostentatious and insanely expensive, but a 8 ft. square niche - it's like sculpture or a jewelry piece in the room. Exquisite!

Amazing! It’s not always about the size of the space it’s all about having great taste and making the space work for you.

I like the luxurious wall to wall upholstered window seat. Personally I would have used a murphy bed. I like the color palette--very calming and appropriate for that latitude.
