This was by far one of the least busy years for "other" #1's, both in actuality and compared with the prior year. Still, as a public service we provide same (and also those "official" #1's - which in May expanded from a Top 50 to a Top 75 - that failed to top one or both of the "other" charts):
- "Wishing On A Star" by Rose Royce
#1 on Melody Maker for 1 week - 11 March 1978
(Blocked "officially" by "Take A Chance On Me, " plus "Come Back My Love" by Darts; on NME, was #2)
- "Denis" by Blondie
#1 on Melody Maker for 3 weeks - 25 March-01, 08 April 1978
#1 on NME for 2 weeks - 01, 08 April 1978
(Blocked "officially" by "Wuthering Heights, " then "Matchstalk Men And Matchstalk Cats And Dogs (Lowry's Song)")
- "I Wonder Why" by Showaddywaddy
#1 on NME for 1 week - 15 April 1978
#1 on Melody Maker for 2 weeks - 15, 22 April 1978
(Blocked "officially" by "Matchstalk Men And Matchstalk Cats And Dogs (Lowry's Song)")
- "Sandy" by John Travolta
#1 on Melody Maker for 1 week - 11 November 1978
(Blocked "officially, " ironically enough, by "Summer Nights"; got no higher than #3 on NME)

And now for those "official" #1's that missed the summit of the NME and/or Melody Maker charts:
- "Figaro" (NME & Melody Maker - #2)
- "Matchstalk Men And Matchstalk Cats And Dogs (Lowry's Song)" (Melody Maker - #2 / NME - #4; both records were 4th and 5th, respectively, of "official only" #1's during the 1970's)
- "Dreadlock Holiday" (Melody Maker - #2)

Now for how the UK #1's presented here fared on Billboard's Hot 100 (as always, those which did not chart will not be listed):

GIRLS' SCHOOL (A-side) # 33
/MULL OF KINTYRE
TAKE A CHANCE ON ME # 3
WUTHERING HEIGHTS #108
NIGHT FEVER # 1 for 8 weeks March 18, 25, April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, May 6, 1978 (#8 R&B)
RIVERS OF BABYLON (A-side) # 30
/BROWN GIRL IN THE RING
YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT # 1 for 1 week June 10, 1978
THREE TIMES A LADY # 1 for 2 weeks August 19, 26, 1978 (#1 R&B--#1 AC)
DREADLOCK HOLIDAY # 44
SUMMER NIGHTS # 5
DA YA THINK I'M SEXY? # 1 for 4 weeks February 10, 17, 24, March 3, 1979 (#5 R&B)
MARY'S BOY CHILD - OH MY LORD # 85

And conversely, here are how other 1978 #1's on Billboard's Hot 100 (aside from the four mentioned above) fared in the UK (again, you know the rules about those that didn't chart ;-) ):
- "How Deep Is Your Love" by the Bee Gees - #3

- "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees - #4
- "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman - #4

- "Miss You" by The Rolling Stones - #3
- "Grease" by Frankie Valli - #3
- "Boogie Oogie Oogie" by A Taste Of Honey - #3
- "Kiss You All Over" by Exile - #6 (its and "Summer Nights' " respective chart positions in each country were practically of inverse proportion to the other)
- "You Needed Me" by Anne Murray - #22
- "MacArthur Park" by Donna Summer - #5
