Should you use the sauna before or after your workout? | Jari Laukkanen

Exercise promotes the release of insulin-like growth factor-1 and its downstream targets, growth hormone and brain-derived neurotrophic factor, to drive muscle and neuron growth. Sauna use increases these factors, too, and when used post-exercise, may have a synergistic effect to improve cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and neurological health. Strength training, however, may have deleterious effects on arterial compliance, a critical aspect of cardiovascular health. Sauna improves arterial compliance and may provide a means to counter some of the negative effects of training. In this clip, Drs. Rhonda Patrick and Jari Laukkanen discuss the advantages of sauna use post-exercise.

I do it BOTH ways, each time... I warm up first by going into dry sauna and doing some moving around in there about 15-20 min, then after I break a sweat I do my workout so much more readily, energetically, and fluidly than if I hadn't sauna'd b4hand.
Then I stretch inside sauna after workout 20 min, to help with everything else.

Sauna for no more than five minutes before working out. Just enough to create capillary dilation and a slight adrenaline boost pre-workout. Then go get wrecked working out and take your full heat shock protein, HGH, body repair 20 minute plus sauna after your workout. No matter how hard you work out, you'll immediately notice that even though you're gaining strength and Mass, that muscle soreness will be almost non-existent as will be the usually attendant lack of flexibility. A look into the data of what extended sauna sessions actually do physiologically will lead one to the conclusion that they belong at the end of workout not at the beginning. Experiment for yourself as I have done and you will be convinced. You don't want a flood of heat shock proteins pre-workout, you want them afterwards, and there's a huge difference

Ok, I was wondering about the sauna effects after a workout. Normally, I shower right after my workout. If I sauna post workout is it ok to shower right after or will that mitigate the effects of the sauna?

Surely the sauna can’t just undo tears in the muscle but I swear it really does undo lasting tension which accidentally helps with muscle growth

I dno what it is but people told me listen to my body and every time I get a crazy pump and use the sauna, I come away looking slim and feeling like I did very little

Pre workout Sauna increase core temperature and reduces the risk of muscle soreness
It also helps to increase blood flow, so when you start your workout, your body is already on „working temperature“

I have been going to sauna after swimming for 2 months every day. Today for the first time, I switched the order. I did sauna before swimming. I could swim easier, smoother, and better today. Usually it would take 100m swimming to warm up but it was not the case today.

Do you get the same post-workout sauna benefits if workout and sauna are several hours apart?

USELESS CLIP! LOL. They never discussed the question besides a few seconds and certainly didn't respond to whether it is appropriate PRE-workout.

I use a hot tub for 20 minutes before my workout stretching and moving the whole time followed by a cold shower. Post workout I relax for 10 minutes in a hot tub and swim. This does take the edge off my workouts but I am warmed up and more flexible
