I have used all three of your tactics in the past, and feel like each feeds my heart, my life, and my genealogy. Service feels so wonderful as does a clean, peaceful house, and a computer where I can find everything! So happy to see you back safe.

I had no idea that you had faced such a multiplicity of challenges in the past year. Your honesty in sharing both your trials and your recommendations of simple genealogy activities you use to keep involved in a beloved pastime are inspiring. I hope the coming years will find you fully recovered and engaged in your pursuit of those elusive ancestors. As a relatively new member of your site, I have learned a great deal from your always enjoyable and informative genealogy videos. I look forward to many more in the future.
Regards,
Jack Gracey

Finding my birth parents over the past 10 months felt like I was Hercule Poirot trying to solve a puzzle. It was great fun.

Great tips! I'm glad things have settled down for you. This morning I woke up stressed and practically in tears due to the state of my place so I got to work and got rid of two trash bags worth of clothes. Also, I am typing up my grandfather's diary. In it, he said that the census taker came to the front door. I checked the census and discovered that the census taker wrote his name down wrong! 🤣

So great to see a video from you! We all have trials in life and times that we just can't get involved in anything big. You offer some really great ideas for people when they face a trial of their own. I like the name one at FS, I was not aware of it. I did what I could for the indexing of the 1950 census. You can do one family or the page. Whatever your mental state allows.

Then your mention of cleaning up your records, well this is a biggie for me and what I have been working on when I just can't do more. I picked up a new naming convention years ago, but with over 20 years of research there are many records to rename. I find I can do just a few or more depending on my time. Keep at it and hopefully life is better for you and your family.

My main problem was trying to do too much at one time on particular projects.

I changed that routine to doing a little on each project and keeping track of the ones that I had done more or less on and focusing on doing the ones I had done less first to get them more complete.

This includes projects related to genealogy but necessarily exclusively such as taking an online course in Italian. I was trying to do too much at one time and then waiting until I had more time rather than just doing as much as I could even if it was only devoting fifteen minutes rather than several hours. This way I was at least doing something rather than the old way where eventually I got behind in my lessons.

I think it is better to go forward a little at a time rather than get burned out and fall behind.

I don't know anyone who hasn't had times in their lives where either messy things are going on or the occasional burnout. I know I have had burnout several times, e.i. no gas in the tank. I find that if I step back for a couple of weeks it helps. Or, sometimes I will be spurred on by something I see on TV. Either way, the brain must rest, and when it is recharged, I am renewed and ready to go again.

Very nice inspirational video! I really liked how you spoke to us as human beings not just fans of genealogy. Thank you.

Glad to see a video from you, Devon. Hopefully the good times return soon. For me, beginning genealogy was itself a product of trouble. Our daughter was born in 2005 with a range of medical issues for which the hospital brought in their resident geneticist, who asked us about our trees. Both my wife and I knew the basics (the kind of tree you were required to assemble around second grade) and my parents were both gone, so my resources were limited. Looking back 17 years later I'm stunned at what I've been able to assemble. And we've been able to identify possible ties to her issues which may, one day, help our sons understand what may follow for them.

I am currently in one of those hard spots. More than one, really. I am scared of where it is leading because it is pointing to a place of permanently altered life.

Decluttering usually gives me more mental energy to deal with the hard spots, but it isn't working this time. I am not living out my purpose and that causes guilt, which doesn't help in any of this, on top of everything else.

One day at a time. I like your thought of "add more gas". :)

"Add gas, add gas." Good idea. ☺️

A great mystery was partially solved when the 70 year old Somerton Man was finally by DNA narrowed down to being Carl Webb. The rest is in the coming research into records about him.
