10M in the last 90 days basically means we should be trying to create viral shorts. For long format content creators, Its impossible to think this way. After making videos for quite sometime, we have come to realize that its very difficult to switch between long and short form in terms of headspace. Its better to focus on one things, creatively speaking, and nail it. Instead of making both in a mediocre way. We feel like the new update doesn't give any incentive to long format creators. Anyone feel the same??

Honestly I found the announcement underwhelming and would call it lame at least. If youtube wanted to just invite successful tiktokers to the platform they could’ve put out a direct plea to them. This “update” offers no benefit to anyone not yet monetized on the platform

Short creators will never make serious money, especially not like long form. Don't get your hopes up with these updates!

The "new rules" are a let down for small creators like me. I have only seen established and popular youtubers receiving millions of views on their shorts. Good luck to everyone

Thanks for the update, Rob. Getting 10m Shorts views is achievable for established channels, who post Shorts every day and have a big fan following. But for small channels it is not possible at all even if you keep uploading Shorts all the time. No incentive for the long form content creators. One thing is very clear... YouTube wants to use Shorts in a big way to earn revenue. This tempted carrot of hitting 10m views will make more people do more and more Shorts, but those creators will get nothing in return. Now we'll see more and more Ads in YouTube Shorts as well. In a gambling house, it's the house that always wins. Let us keep up with our dreams and perseverance to achieve our goals. Good luck to all fellow creators who share good things.

I'm a small channel that's getting close to the 1000 subs, but missing lots of the watch hours, but I'm not disgruntled by it. I truthfully believe Youtube should want people that are serious and are chasing those big dreams. If it takes me a bit longer to get monetized, I'm fine with that. I had a realistic target, and so far I'm on track.

1k subs and 4k hours is much more realistic and anyone can do it. Keep trying, don’t get frustrated, and before you know it, you’ll be getting monthly checks. Keep grinding y’all! Best of luck!

This means for a channel with 1, 000 subs, that channel would need to be averaging over 111K shorts views per day in a 90 day period to get monetized.

For a small creator like me, that would mean I would need to average more then my entire Channel viewership combine PER DAY and essentially double my view count.

They need to lower it to 500 and 2k hours on all videos to make the goals even feasible for the average person

10M views in 90 days is crazy!! Would probably have to post shorts every hour to get monetized lol

4000 hours over 12 months will be much easier. Unless YouTube reworks how Shorts work I feel like it is almost impossible. Right now Shorts seem to stop after 24 hours or less.

Views on shorts are easy. 40 million views in 90 days

10M views is one thing, but to give someone a 90 day timeframe to achieve it seems a bit unfair 😂

I had 4k hours on my 4th video. It took me 6 more months to get 1k subs. 10 million views in 90 days is insane and will lead to burnout. Also not discussed is how shorts creators who don't use music get screwed.

They should reduce the 4000 hours to 2000 hours or 1000 because vods (long videos) are competing with shorts within the same app making it more difficult for small creators to obtain the 4000 hours .

I would love it if they would lower the watch hours to like 2000 hours, currently I'm sitting at around 2100 hours which is normal for me unfortunately.

The way I understand it, there won’t be an individual CPM per channel on the short ad payments. It’s just ONE GIANT SHORTS AD BUCKET. Then 45% of that is allocated to creators. And you and I get paid out of that based on how many views we have on shorts. Super simple. Make more shorts (or get more shorts views) and you get a bigger slice of that pie, but there’s only one giant pie for the entire world worth of shorts creators. Same “CPM” as everyone else on shorts, since ads are run in the shorts player in between videos and not attached to any particular video like they are on long form videos. I think it’ll be great. We’ll see though :) only downside I can see to that lump system is no targeted ads, so maybe less effective for advertisers, and maybe less pay because of it. Or maybe it’s so competitive for ad space that they pay a lot for that space (like a super bowl commercial). We’ll see how that part plays out too!
