Before this battle Aegon and Rhaena actually snuck into Kings Landing so Aegon could claim his fathers dragon Quicksilver, and Rhaena could get her dragon Dreamfyre back. They had been traveling without dragons on their Royal Progress due to Aenys fearing his son would look unmanly if he rode a horse while Rhaena rode Dreamfyre. That’s how the faith besieged them so easily.
Then they went to the Westerlands to try and rally support for Aegon but few great lords were willing to back him officially without at least one victory against Maegor who was a proven warrior with both Targaryen swords and Balerions rider. Maegor brutally denied him that chance before his rebellion could even really start.

He thankfully didn't take after his father. People say Maegor saved the dynasty but he destroyed the realms trust in the Targaryen's, raped, murdered children and family, (sometimes they were one and the same) destroyed houses that literally did nothing like Harroway and ruled through fear. There was a reason so many flocked to Jaehaerys, he sowed the seeds of dissent by being a terrible king. Aegon didn't take after his father anyway and was more martial like his grandfather and at least in his youth seemed to lack Maegor's vices.

This makes you really understand how dope Jaraerys was, to have his oldest brother and sister killed, his next oldest brother trapped, tortured, and killed by Maegor and still come out the dopest kind the realm ever saw. His direct family really fumbled his legacy
