The worst was mad king who literally ended Targaryen dynasty how is this even a debate.

Let's look at it honestly, what did Aegon II do wrongly? He only asked for the throne against a tyrant who showed real colors before even setting the throne, his rule wasn't hated by the public at all unlike Rhaenyra, Aerys II, Maegor and Aegon IV

If any other king was in Viserys I's place the Dance of the Dragons wouldn't have happened. The other kings would've either 1 been smart enough to do a better job securing Rhaenyra on the throne or 2 just named Aegon. All of Viserys' failings are compounded by the fact that he inherited the leadership of the best Westeros and the most powerful generation of house Targaryen. His actions lead to the destruction of all of that.

There are so many things Viserys could've done to better secure Rhaenyra.

First, is codifying genderblind succession into law because laws matter way more than a King's words, especially if he's dead. If lord's didn't like it he could use dragons to enforce liberal reform but he was too week for that.

Second, he knew Rhaenyra's children were bastards so he should've made her disinherit them for her legitimate sons and thereby stop her from making an Aegon IV level mistake. He didn't do this because he wasn't he wasn't man enough to confront his dear Rhaenyra on this. As soon as he would see her cry he would lose all heart. This is basically what happened during the confrontation after Aemond lost his eye.

Third, he should've kept Rhaenyra at court.

Fourth, he should've been a present father to his other children. His failure as a father is why they were completely under Alicent's control instead of his.

The fourth thing Viserys does wrong on my list should make you wonder if his words about loving all of his family were just empty words. Yes, I'm saying Viserys was shallow. He supports Rhaenyra only because she was descended from Aemma. He wants Aemma's descendants on the throne at all costs because he still feels guilty. If Aegon was Aemma's son he would've been named by Viserys in an instant. He doesn't really care about making the realm better for other women and neither does Rhaenyra. Imagine sowing the seeds of the worst war in Westerosi history just because of pettiness. The chances of dying at childbirth were over 30% in the middle ages. Viserys was not the only one to suffer that sort of tragedy. It's not a valid excuse.

Similar to Aerys II, the show makes it clear from the council meetings that his reign's peace is because of other greater statesmen like Lionel Strong and Otto Hightower. He literally named Rhaenyra on a whim even though he says he didn't. How does he not realize that the only reason him or his descendants are on the throne is because of direct male line descendant?? Otherwise, Rhaenys is the true Queen by all right!! Then their's that time where he says Rhaenyra's descendants would be part of the Targaryen dynasty showing he doesn't understand what a dynasty means in the context of Westeros. It's frustrating that Viserys of all king's doesn't understand legal precedents or technicalities because he's the historian one!!

The Iron Throne literally kills him btw! It gives him leprosy through a cut.

HoD has made a very strong case (to me) that Viserys I is the biggest contributor to the fall of the Targaryens.

He was not the “worst king” based on his actual time of ruling Westeros, but his lack of action in properly preparing Rhaenyra to rule AND not preparing enough great houses to accept her as their ruler is what really led to the Dance and the loss of the true power of the Targaryens: dragons.

IMO Viserys was just as responsible for Aegon II being a terrible king and person as Alicent and Otto. 1) He never showed any real care or attention for his other kids 2) He didn’t properly prepare Rhaenyra for her role as queen 3) He didn’t crack down on Rhaenyra for her affair with Harwin. Honestly, Alicent put it best herself: “One child like that is a mistake, three is an insult”. I 100% get it, she loved Harwin, but Rhaenyra’s affair was a huge deal to Alicent, it spat in the face of not only her own faith but also the law. If Rhaenyra married someone she could have kids with, or if Laenor was at least able to “do the deed” and their kids were actually his, then I’m sure Alicent would’ve been WAY more hesitant to go against Rhaenyra. But Viserys was willfully blind to the truth, and so the lines were drawn.

Aside from his bastards, he was also very petty, encouraging rumours that his dearon wasn’t his to spite him and his mother, queen Naerys. He was also known to have slept with a former mistress’s daughter, a 14 year old, giving her an STD which she later died from and threw her and her parents out of kings landing when he got bored with them. He also hated dorne, even after the peace treaty that only added to his hatred for his son, resulting his his favour for deamond, and legitimised his bastards as a final insult to his family

this might be an unpopular opinion, but due to viserys’s the first indecisiveness and incompetence, the targaryen lost their most valuable assets aka dragons. I’d argue that the thrones aren’t that valuable compares to dragons, because as long as you have dragon, you can always make another throne. also, i dont think it would matter as much what the later kings do after viserys since, before they lost their dragons, the targaryen are basically a tyrant with the only nuclear weapons in the world. what aerys the second or aegon the second do after is totally negligible, if they somehow still hold on to their dragonpower. so for that, viserys is the worst king for me.

All the other ones would’ve been good choices for the worse if it wasn’t because of madking literally destroy their house that the two living members that were left with a tick every name with beggars without having benefactors, they would have lived as long as they have a aegon2, the second would have probably one that owner if the Medicaid vetting you know, destroy the whole Targaryen or your house thing
