What if your car could power your life?

The sun is not always shining and the wind is not always blowing. Bi-directional charging lets you charge your car when it’s best for the environment and your wallet – then use the electricity later to power the things you love.

Coming in the future to selected markets with the Volvo EX90, our new fully electric flagship SUV.

I think it isn't emphasized enough here how the main advantage of this is that you basically use your car as a battery for your house. You charge it from your solar panels or wind turbine when they are producing energy, and you can then use that energy in your house at night or when there's no wind. That solves the problem, for example, of solar panels on the roof of a house producing power "aimlessly" while you're at work, and then you use power from the grid in the evening when you're home.

What about battery degradation? Will bi-directional charging make the battery degrade faster? Solutions?

Will there be a limit of how much energy can be used from the battery for V2X during the lifetime of the car/battery?

I just had an idea. Instead of filling the car with more and smarter electronics why don't we make the car roof (or paint/cover in the future) a solar panel that absorbs energy the whole day when people are running around and working. Cars are just standing outside anyway. Or we could put a solar panel on top of the car when we finish driving. And you are saying that the wind is not blowing all the time so that we could make electricity, but whenever we drive the car there is ALWAYS wind. Can't this wind be turned into electricity to charge the battery every time the car moves? Maybe the solutions are simpler than we can imagine.

Great idea and good to see Volvo are thinking ahead. It will be really interesting to see how they tackle and incentivise customers to adopt the new technology who already have callboxes and EV's swapping to a Volvo with this built in?

I think V2x is also a bit late than others but it might be due to provide better and safer technology. If they recognized as a technology leader and human centered by providing perfect & safer products in the market, their future will be bright, hope to go that direction Volvo car!

Not sure it's a good idea to cycle you car battery up and down constantly even for economic or grid stabilization purposes. that degrades your battery and shortens it's life span.
