What jumper cable goes on first , when your jumping your car battery

There is a lot of missing information. First, connect the positive cable to the dead battery, then connect the other end of the positive cable to the positive terminal of the live battery (make sure the negative ends do not touch any metal or the positive terminals). Next, connect the negative cable to the negative terminal of the live battery and then connect the other end of the negative cable to a good ground (not the negative terminal of the dead battery). Find a metal surface without paint. When removing the cables, do the reverse steps.

When I started my mechanics apprenticship in 1970, was told when useing jump leads, 1st on to + positive (adding) 1st off - Negitive ( subtact) on neg earth cars which most are,

I connected the negative first and then the positive and my car went black, then I did it correctly and I got it running. I hope I didn’t cause any permanent damage, please let me know if I did

Bad demonstration for dummies like me. Seeing black cable in your hand saying put negative on first. Had to watch couple times before realizing that Red was positive
