And as a matter of fact, the negative jumper cable should not be connected to the battery, but to engine or chassis ground away from the battery! This is to keep sparks if any away from a potentially damaged battery leaking hydrogen gasses! Plus don’t always rely on red and black battery cables on a used car, verify the symbols on the battery (+ or pos ) for the anode side and (- or neg) for the cathode side! Let’s be smart and safe!

This is something simple that most people think they are doing correctly, but according to safety practices both slave cables hooked to the battery can create issues!

I burned my finger a little because I have a car that always had positive on the left side but I made a mistake and thought all cars were the same for some reason and I had to hook up the other car battery but it was backwards so the negative was on the LEFT side. Lesson learned: always check the - + symbols before you hook it up.

The order matters, but not because the battery requires it. The order prevents you from accidentally shorting red/black. Most of the entire car metal frame has electrical connections tying it to the black terminal.

If you connect black first: if your red clamp was laying on or grazes against any part of the frame or slips out if your hand & falls on the front/side metal, you've shorted red/black and will get a really bad result/fire/huge sparks. If you do what this guy is doing, order doesnt matter.

If you connect RED first: if black clamp grazes the frame on accident, it will start charging, you may see little sparks, but no harm done.

Do RED FIRST order for the same reason you keep a gun's safety on- mistakes happen.

Well it’s good to know, , but if mistakenly a battery is new install it in a vehicle but positive wire connection is wrong I mean positive +cable of the car in the negative side of battery and that’s always red and negative cable in the plus pole of the battery, , , what will happen? I did it but engine starter was ok but engine was not ignited only the starter voice, ,? So what to do ? Maybe fuse problem?

For those asking why... And im going off chitty memory.. the sequence is to avoid sparks which could ignite gases and vapors emitted by the battery itself.... Maybe im making it up, maybe im not. Dont know, Dont care.

Thats just a safety protocol, if a battert is cracked then it can cause a fire or damage components. If you know both car batteries are in good shape thennit do t matter really....

Didn’t know you’re supposed to take negative off first 😅 but I’ve never had a problem however I did it

Not bad advice, but not fully accurate either. Red to red, but then the black cable goes to the engine block. I am ASE certified.

Red to dead red, then, red to good red. Never, never, never, have both engines running, and revving at the same time. You can likely damage the electrical systems.

If it still wont crank. Then put the negative on the exhaust or engine bracket and try again.
