You’re correct in the theory: when the light source is further, the relative size is smaller thus creating harder, more pin point light source. However, in your example, the picture with the flash positioned further from the model clearly shows softer light. Why is that? Because the whole white room is acting as a huge reflector that is bouncing back light to her, so it is like you have a huge light source that is the whole room. The flash power itself would need to be MUCH higher than it was at that distance to show what you wanted to show (or the walls being black, haha).

I love how much he compliments and cherishes her, it's adorable to see them working together.

Dude this is super clean and straight to the point. light placement is something I struggled with all the time. Do these same rules apply to three point lighting as well.

I think it’s entirely possible that Manny has no idea what he’s doing, but the shots turn out anyway because Diana is so stunning and talented. I mean, even the “bad” shots look pretty dang good!

It's good to know how flash distance affects the look of a shot, but I'm not sure about the right/wrong part of it. I actually like the way your shot looked with the light further away better.

Love your videos... but your wife sense of humour makes it all come together. You guys make a great team... keep up the good work; it's pleasure every time you load a new video, there's always something new to learn! And please, don't lose the simplicity in your presentation! Cheers!

your videos kind of saved my photography, but to me the futher away the light the softer it is but making the picture flat, the closer, the harder but more flattering

I have subscribed your channel from all my 3 channels because I don’t wanna miss your videos. I always absolutely enjoy it watching. I just ordered my 70-200 2.8gm.

Thank goodness for everyone that you are able to tell everyone that they're wrong, and you know the *right* way to do it.

When you moved the flash up to its proper angle over Diana you can just see how much better the natural contour of her cheek bones look, compared to the flash being level, making her look more flat

Some lighting advice. If your model is turning into a different direction. Use a white card on the opposite side of your light. It opens up the shadows. And the flash can bounce off of it, also opening up the shadows.

You should mention in your next video about lighting....CAMERA SETTINGS. Shutter is a big component when beginners are watching YT videos like this and don't know.
