There are many reasons why flash is the perfect light source for studio portrait photography. It’s super bright, it’s very versatile and if used correctly it can actually make your photos sharper thanks to its ability to freeze camera shake and model movement. But if the results are not perfect the very first time you use flash, it can be a frustrating experience.

That’s where photographer Gavin Hoey is here to help. In this video tutorial, he guides you through your first steps into the wonderful world of studio flash photography. As Gavin explains, the first and most important step to get right is your camera settings. Once those are dialed in, you won’t have to change them again during the whole session.

Next, Gavin moves on to get the power right on a manual flash. He shows you what things will alter the exposure and a really simple lighting trick that allows him to change the flash position but keep the same flash settings.

Gavin puts everything into practice by taking head and shoulder portraits and some full-length photos in his small home studio. He uses a single Flashpoint EVOLV200 throughout, although the techniques and tips would work in exactly the same way for photographers using anything from a manual Speedlight to a large, mains-powered studio strobe.

Gavin, you’re by far my favorite “teacher” on Adorama! Very clear explanations, and you make it easy to understand as you go through the whole process, start to finish. I always learn and have fun watching!

The simplicity of the setup and and quality of the photos, demonstrate that good technique doesn't require multiple lights and complex setups. It's a pleasure to watch how simple arrangements can yield excellent results.

I like the way you teach. How to do proper studio exposure by not using an incident flash meter, and how to re-position the light without re-adjusting your settings (same distance from subject to strobe flash).

You are a genius!!! It is the best way I have ever seen someone explain lighting. Specially for beginners. Usually other professionals say, take down or put up 1-2-3 stop. When a beginner doesn’t know what is a stop. Your explanations are magnificent!!! Thanks 😊
