May not want to use an old, used USB as a physical security key for your PC. If it fails, you are kinda in a pickle. A physical key is a great idea though, especially for work computers and laptops as long as you can keep it on you or at least not with your laptop. Make a backup too and hide it.

Another (and my fav) tool you can install on a flash drive is - Boot Repair Disk. Coverts your USB stick into a bootable media, allows you to fix your linux installations, uninstall other OSes, browse your Hard drive (useful if your PC won't boot), connect to the internet to follow some online tutorials (comes with firefox installed).

I always have 1 USB stick ready with this.

I've had horrible luck with windows built in recovery and backup tools. One I suggest is Macrium Reflect can use of those old flash drives as the media that boots up into a windows PE environment to restore the backup files. The free edition will handle almost everything the standard home user would ever need. Nice video.

You can use a USB to install Windows on a new pc. Also you can use it to transfer drivers for WiFi to your new pc so you can download other drivers
