Hormone therapy: How Long Can I Use It For? // Many women wonder how long they can safely stay on hormone therapy, especially once they feel well on their hormone therapy. In this video, I discuss how long it is safe to stay on hormone therapy, and three big questions you and your doctor should discuss each year that you see your doctor for refills on your hormone therapy at your annual menopause visit.

Where you told you had to stop hormone therapy at a magical birthday? How did you respond?

I have been on hormone therapy forever. Transitioned from bcp to hrt no problem. I feel great on the climara patch and a progesterone IUD. I have no history of cancer and no other contraindications. I will always seek a provider who will keep me on this regimen until I die😄

I am 57 and seeing a NAMS menopause specialist for the first time this month. I’m five years post menopausal, but I still have some issues. My mother died of dementia this past May, and she broke her wrist years prior. I plan on doing this as long as possible for the benefits into old age. Wish me luck!!

I’ve been on hormone therapy ever since menopause and I’m now 69 and will never stop unless forced to. I have two older sisters, the oldest one has been on hormones forever, like me, and the other could not because of break-through bleeding. She, the younger of my sisters, was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and the oldest sister is still sharp minded. I can’t help but wonder if the hormones protected my older sister.

I am 70 yrs old and have been on HRT Therapy for many years. Recently saw a GYN for pelvic examine. I have no health problems, but after seeing HRT on my meds list said you need to stop taking HRT completely. I asked why and he said your chances of breast cancer go up dramatically as you age and stay on HRT. I follow you and believe I should stay on them. No one in my family has had cancer. Any thoughts? He said my uterus lining has thickened but are in the guidelines.

My doctor won’t let me go past age 65. I’ll have to find another doctor.

I just got diagnosed with precancerous breast cells in my left breast. My obgyn and the surgeon in charge of my case both want me to stop my bio identical hormones completely but my naturopathic doctor who prescribes my bio identicals said they both don’t know what they’re talking about and wants me to stay on them and I do too!!! I’m 69 years old and have been on HRT pretty much from the start of hormones around 52 years old. Any advice?

Always so helpful!!! My provider reluctantly prescribed HRT because she said it caused her breast cancer and told me she won’t prescribe it long term which was really disappointing because I really like her! Unfortunately we don’t have any NAMS providers in our area 😔

Hi Dr Hirst
I have been on BHRT for 5 years my labs still read <0 estrogen. She recently upped it to 1.25 but told me she doesn’t prescribe for lab numbers, she prescribes for symptoms like hot flashes. I have osteopenia, it’s inherited, it’s the reason I wanted to be on estrogen including heart and brain health. Should my labs read that I have estrogen in my blood or is she correct in saying that as long as I don’t have “sweats” and the usual symptoms, I’m fine?

I'm 57 and have an estrogen patch with progesterone IUD. Curious if anything I take is a contraindication, or lacking: Claritin / D3 5, 000IU / K-2 MK-7 180mcg / C 800mg / Krill oil 1, 000mg or Fish Oil 1250mg / marine collagen peptides powder. Thank you - love your channel!

I took HRT for 30 years then at 70 got BC. So I was made to stop and crashed into the hot sweats whilst undergoing chemo. Not nice and I wish I’d stopped HRT years ago!

I have my first appointment with my dr tomorrow about estrogen gel.
My hot flashes are horrible, and keep me up all night since I’ve been in surgical menopause 2 months ago.
I’m 44
