Worth mentioning is that the wall sockets have on-off switches so there is no need to unplug your appliance.

I am from the UK, I was taught to wire plugs as a child, its really very simple. Now all appliances come with plugs attached.

In defence of other plug socket types, it should be noted that the UK rewrote their standards to favour this plug type in 1961 - they effectively gave themselves "last movers advantage" in this area, making a whole new plug type long after electricity was commonplace throughout the world, and they could observe things that worked and didn't work in earlier plug/socket types. But yes, as a daily user of Type G (UK standard) plugs, I agree they are the best.

A British plug could be used and re-used indefinitely. Fuses can be replaced, wires swapped from one appliance to another: even the brass prongs can be cannibalised from one plug to another. Wiring them is a bit fiddly, but we were taught how to do it at school; and every new plug comes with instructions how to wire it.

One thing he did not mention is the cable exits the plug from the bottom and if you trip over the wire it is very difficult to pull the plug out of the socket.

We still use round pin plugs in the UK, for 15amp circuits like water heaters.

I am an electrician in the United States and I think the British plug, as well as the 240 volt supply should be the world wide standard.

The reason it’s a topic is because everyone who comes to Britain talks about our plugs, as they are so different to plugs in any other country.

Also worth mentioing is that the plugs have strain relief on the wire going inside the plug, so it's really hard to pull on the wire that lways faces down anyway.

I was at school in the 80's and we all learnt how to wire a plug boys and girls in the same classes.it made you wonder how other things worked.what else you could do.
Then everything started coming with the plugs attached so I didn't need to do it that much.
Now younger gens have no idea how to do it and probably aren't curious about how things work and if they can fix them?

He also didn't mention the cable pointing going down when it's plugged in, rather than outwards like many others, so it's harder to catch it on something and pull it out.

I was born in 1962 and I remember round pin plugs. A mate of mine was always putting his fingers behind the plug and touching the pins as he pulled it out. He would then jump up in the air and wonder why.... bloody idiot. My dad taught me how to wire a plug when I was 7. Even most adults these days don't know how to do it. Electricity can be dangerous but it's not so scary if you know how it works. ✌️❤️🇬🇧

Some of the features in the plug are unnecessary in Britain now however they are still useful and would be relevant in developing countries. For example the fuse in the plug should be rated for the appliance this prevents damage not just to the wiring in the building but also to the appliance meaning faults can be repaired cheaper it also means homes can be wired in a single ring of copper wire the way post war British houses were safely and cheaply. And while the plugs are slightly more expensive they are completely reusable and if looked after will last a lifetime saving money in the long run and cutting down on plastic waste.
