As a Chinese person, I apologize for the way they acted. That’s just not human anymore. Chinese “appearance standards” are very strict. They treat anyone “different” from them like they aren’t humans anymore. This sickens me to my core. I’m truly sorry for anyone who experienced discrimination from the Chinese.

I got that once in Ulsan, South Korea in 2005, but he was just an innocent young child who thought I had rubbed some dark paint on my skin. His mum was totally embarrassed & she apologised, but my husband and I educated him & laughed it off.
South Koreans are quite respectful and friendly.

I honestly felt embarrassed with the behavior of locals when my friends visited. Both my white and black friend got stared at so much and had their personal bubble and privacy violated so much. Some people would even follow them around and even try to stare at them in the restroom. Like wtf? We all have the same parts. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Btw most don't intend anything bad. Being in a homogeneous society, some take their curiosity way too far and they don't have manners. Definitely call them out on this and publicly shame them and they will realize it is inappropriate.

One time I experienced the exact opposite in the sweetest way. My mom is an OBGYN and when we were traveling to Zimbabwe we got to go to a school and she got to teach the girls there for a day about their bodies and being safe and stuff. They were ENAMORED with me. The girls told me that I was the first person their age they ever met who was white. There’s a picture of me somewhere with every single girl trying to reach out and touch my skin or my hair. They were so so sweet but they absolutely couldn’t keep their hands off (and they were not like young kids, 13-18)

Went to Shanghai, people stared so bad we didn't want to go outside. Couldn't get a cab on our own then one day this old Chinese guy helped us in the grocery store and saw us outside trying to get a cab, he got one for us smiled and said "have happy day" that was years ago but we never forgot him.

I'm Persian, a lot of us have big eyes and long lashes, in East Asia people would try to touch my eyes and lashes, when I would go to get a massage the ladies touch my lashes and my body hair, asked me with hand gestures to sleep with them.

I’ve heard this is completely true. My friend went on a trip through China and there was a black couple in the group anyway my friend said so many people would just stare and do exactly what he described. She said she felt horrible for them.

I was in Korea back in 2012 when non-asian tourists weren't really a thing yet, or at least not in big concentrations and yes you have to get used to a lot of stares and a few grannies touching your hair. And if we went out in a group, no one would even sit close to us on public transport xD But as soon as you start speaking Korean, you win them over haha

I lived in china when I was really young, moved right after I turned seven— I had blonde, curly hair at the time, my mom blonde as well. people would try to touch our hair (to see if it felt like a barbie doll’s) and take so many pictures of me my mom (like seven months pregnant with one of my younger siblings) broke some guy’s expensive camera while knocking him to the ground. it’s crazy, I can’t imagine having a whole different skin color in china. glad I don’t remember much of it.

Honestly I feel like that’s such an usual experience from people visiting China.
My cousin is a blond pale girl with green eyes and she went visiting China. They were being stopped by random people every single time they went outside and people were even taking pictures of her without her consent or surrounding her 😭

I understand being curious about something unusual for you but I think in those situations being respectful is even more important. You can be curious and ask questions nicely but sneakily taking pictures of a random person in the street is CREEPY 💀
