The acrylic platter is a nice upgrade (and yes, you can, and should, play the record directly placed onto the acrylic surface - a frosted surface is better and less 'slippy' though (a record clamp can help here to couple the record more closely and stop slipping!)... the record is better sounding when coupled directly to the acrylic surface), however, for the U-Turn, I think the biggest problem that they have, is that the cue-lever for the arm is is an "optional extra" whereas for virtually every other turntable, it's a standard! And for a beginner, it's even more important!
In the UK/Europe you can buy a similar type of turntable from 'Pro-Ject' (Austrian brand), called the Primary, and now, Primary E, which is below £200, and has a solid MDF platter, an Ortofon OM5E cartridge in an excellent tonearm that also features a cue-lever as standard!! :-D An excellent upgrade to the Pro-Ject Primary is an acrylic platter replacement (frosted finish), which helps with speed accuracy and overall sound reproduction.
I bought a Primary a few years back to evaluate alongside my other turntables; it was good.... very good; however, with the acrylic platter it was elevated into a different sound territory!
But... it has the cue-lever as standard! ;-)
