Straight out of the bat, I can name a couple of reasons why VPN router combo is useful.

First of all, you don’t care about the simultaneous connections limit that many VPN providers have. That’s the main difference between VPN router vs VPN service, and it helps a lot, especially when you have a lot of devices.

Secondly, you can even use VPN routers in conjunction with devices that don’t have dedicated VPN apps, such as consoles or certain smart TVs.

Thirdly - your connection will be secured 24/7, without the need to connect on each device’s startup.

Unfortunately, installing a VPN on router is pretty confusing, so let me help you with a quick VPN router setup guide.

Does your router support VPN?

This should be written in the manual straight away. But even if you don’t have the best VPN router with full compatibility, it’s still possible to make some of them work with custom firmware. On the other hand, if you are renting your router from your Internet Service Provider, you probably won’t be able to install VPN on your router. ISPs often provide the cheapest possible routers with limited firmware, so it won’t be possible to perform advanced configurations required to setup a VPN.

Installing a VPN on router:

When choosing a VPN, look for providers with inherent router support. For VPNs like Surfshark, ExpressVPN or NordVPN router compatibility is very good. ExpressVPN even has a dedicated router app. Even if you have another option in mind, all you need to look for is compatibility with your router and easy installation guides. Good VPNs often have 24/7 live chat customer support services. That said, don’t just skip security and privacy features either - you have to keep yourself secure. In any case, you can check the discounts for the best VPNs I found in the description below.

As for routers, I recommend using one of those - they have native support for a VPN router connection, so setting them up is very easy. Alternatively, it's best to use a router with firmware that is based on OpenWRT, as it natively supports WireGuard which is super useful on router configurations. A good option to go for would be any kind of router from GL.iNet. Though most VPN nowadays do not support a manual WireGuard connection, so we will use OpenVPN for now.

With that said, we don’t let brands dictate our opinions - if we said it, that means it’s what we truly believe. Buying through our links will not cost you anything extra and as a matter of fact, may cost less due to discounts.

Thank you so much, the first option worked like a charm on my T-Mobile 5G internet Inseego router. FYI: I had to disable my VPN connection just to be able to leave this comment as I continued to receive "Comment failed to post". I was able to re-enable my VPN on my router and I can leave comments on channels now.

everybody talks about how great is to setup a vpn on a router, but nobody talks about the drawbacks: In my case my router reduces the Internet speed from 94Mbs to 7Mbts, a reduction of 90%. this is an area I have not seen ANY comments. I don't care about my wifi ( I already have a mesh wifi), but routers do not advertise its CPU performance very well!

I have a TPLink router and the setup screen shows that it does indeed allow a VPN setup. Is it possible to pick and choose which devices will get the VPN access or is it an all or nothing type of thing? For instance, I only want my Apple TV, Firestick and Windows computer to use the VPN. I do not want my family's Iphones to use it because I have heard there are issues with IMessage and facetime calls when connected to a VPN. Thanks for any help!

Thanks for the video - I work from home so I used a work VPN to log in and get stuff done. I'm hardwired to my modem. I just got a new one, netgear nighthawk and now I'm having issues connecting to my work VPN. Once I log in, it starts connecting, then it drops, connects, then drops, it'll do this for hours. Do you have any tips or insight on why that is?

I'm using a Asus RT N66U, setup looks identical, but when I click on Credentials, step 3, I do not get a User Name and Password, I get "please create a name for this key pair" and if I do that, I get a public and private key. Will this work?

QUESTION:
Using norton vpn on my smartphone I can use a different location like the usa instead of japan

Then I can search for eg the lost gold of ww2
And yes now I get the complete full series from history so amazing

But I am not able to cast it on the big screen tv using google chrome cast

So now there is this method where I need to install open vpn on my router

But since I use a nokia router they have their own vpn gateway pre installed

Cannot change that I guess and cannot change that into norton vpn where I choose usa as my location

So what do I need to do using my nokia router?
Model: XS-2426G-B

Thanks very much

Here is my situation I have a IPTV box (MAG254) which will not connect to my internet, I get a Error code 1020. I beleive it is because my ISP provider is blocking the IPTV's portal address. My thinking is to connect another router with VPN functonalty to my existing router(TP-Link Wireless N Router WR840N model:TL-WR840N) and ther by connecting the Mag254 o the VPN.Will my theory work? this is all going to be wireless.
