There are a number of advantages to setting up VPN on your router, which include coverage for all devices, even those IoT devices that don't have dedicated VPN apps. Also, using a VPN router means that you don't have to worry about simultaneous connections.

In this tutorial, I'm going to walk you step-by-step through the process of installing a VPN on a router and what to do if your WiFi router doesn't seem to allow for VPN configurations.

I am so happy I have found your YouTube channel. At 62 there are a lot of things technology related that I don't understand, VPN for example, and my oldest son just doesn't have time to help the old man out. Damned software engineers anyway! Being permanently retired it's time for me to figure technology stuff on my own and you make it understandable! Thank you for presenting the content you do!

One thing to mention though is that the default IP address of most home routers is actually 192.168.1.1 (and not 198.168.1.1 as mentioned a couple of times). I'm only saying that here in case it helps someone get connected who's not having any luck connecting using "198". Besides that, it's a really helpful, easy to follow tutorial, nicely presented. Thanks! :)

I like your video. Very clearly explained. One thing you might want to point out is that the processors in routers aren't very powerful (compared to PCs). The act of doing all that encrypting/decrypting will drastically reduce the speeds you get from your ISP. On my ASUS router (RT-AC1900P) I never seem to get much over 20Mbps, even though my ISP will do 400+. I contacted the VPN (in my case PIA) and the guy there explained how the chips in the routers just can't do the job fast enough for high speeds.

Loved it. Very well explained. I predict a lot of other people will stumble across this video who are trying to figure out whether to use a VPN on individual devices as opposed to going to the wifi route.

Nice and simple. I was going to set up a dedicated VPN router on the home network. Even went out and purchased WRT3200ACM. But I don't like the idea of having to log into the router every time I need to change VPN connections (States, Countries, etc) so I think I'll just stick with VPN on my device.

I HAVE A QUESTION: I currently have a work laptop and I would like to work remotely without my company knowing about it. I have been told that I need a VPN server ( raspberry pi) and a client VPN (travel router). I am not allowed to install anything on my work laptop so this is the only way. Does this video solve this solution or would you recommend something else? I just want to be able to work on my work laptop and be in another country without my company finding out about it. Please let me know how I can go about doing this. Thanks!

Thank you for sharing this clear video. What is still unclear to me, is the way you keep connected to your local internet provider.

5:34 but how can I make some applications or ports NOT pass by VPN? Like for Steam and other online games I do not want them to use the VPN for risk of getting banned or extra lag, is there a way to whitelist application level traffic?

could you disable the wifi on the AT&T box and plug a preflashed wireless router into it?

"Most VPNs won't natively offer split tunneling. If you get a router with ExpressVPN, they have a dedicated router OS that offers split tunneling. Otherwise, you could also set it up where your guest WiFi network doesn't have a VPN and that's where you connect if you don't want a VPN connection."

Question: Can you do the opposite? Set the guest network to work on a VPN? Thank you.
