Next time you've got bad cell service, remember there's probably a menac flying 40, 000 feet above you with airplane mode off

Me: turns airplane mode off
Plane: does a 360 no scope into the nearest cell tower

*squawk 7600 happens*

Squawk 7600 is a squawk code used for communications failures. If the pilot fails to communicate to Air Traffic Control but can hear ATC, they can press the ident button to communicate and return to 1701 (a code used by pilots to signify normal and usual operations). If the pilot is failing to communicate to ATC and hearing them, the plane will go into the squawk code we know as squawk 7600.

This really shows how complicated these aircraft systems are and how little things can affect them a ton! Great video!

One thing that you can avoid by putting your phone in airplane mode is a major headache and panic when you get to your destination and there is like 2% battery life left because your phone was searching for a signal the entire time using all that battery life

Basically if you are using wifi then your phone will increase the strength of the radio signals and then when it finnaly connects it basically blasts a huge radio wave which can effect aircraft electronics

Its actually because when the phone cant find a signal, it sends out extremely strong signals, so when you become unexpectedly close to a cell tower, it blasts the cell tower, drowning out any other calls on the ground.

Another side effect of airplane mode being off is that is could cause a slight buzzing sound inside of the pilots headphones

“all passengers have to use airplane mode”
“nah frick you”
-RIP to all on the ground

Overloading signals on your phone can also cays it to overheat, which is why the safety video says”if your device overheats, pls let a flight adentdent know”

It can also charge you a lot depending on where you’re going and if have the international deal

Fun fact: the tech to block out phone signals from airplane communication was designed and implemented almost 20 years ago, they just haven't gotten around to letting you not use airplane mode. Also, apparently the people behind it said it would be annoying to have like 100 ppl on phone calls in a compact 'room'

My dad has been a aircraft mechanic since pre 9-11 and he said it was implemented so you can’t contact anyone on the ground before landing or at takeoff to shoot your plane down or something else. Hence the “okay we’re at 10, 000ft you can now use your electronic devices” or whatever it is. It was made because of 9/11

It’s also so 200 people aren’t making calls to their friends saying “I’m on a plane”.

Imagine you fly to The Everest like the intro

Not ideal when you have 300 ppl trying to connect to a cell tower every half hour.

There is also one more reason. If you have airplane mode on you can not call people. Imagine this situation:
Someone is sitting with there phone talking to someone during the takeoff roll but then the plane rejects its takeoff for some reason. The person could then drop the phone and it would be flying trough the cabin at like 100 knots. Then someone tall is sitting in the front. Yeah, that wouldn’t turn out well
