The issue is not interference with critical flight instruments. The issue is, your cell phone would scream at full throat to get a connection to the ground, and imagine a hundred phones doing that at the same time. It would do no good but essentially jam everyone's cell service, and it would likely cause disruptions to people using their phones on the ground as well.

Why would modern planes have Wi-Fi if a mobile data connection could send the plane crashing down? They wouldn't. The reason Wi-Fi is OK but mobile data isn't, is because with Wi-Fi the one single mobile data connection with the appropriate wireless hardware is shared between all users so only one connection needs to be made to the ground.

Engineer here: If cellphones were really capable of interfering with the aircraft in any meaningful way, they would ban you from taking them onboard. If they're willing to stop you from taking in liquids for no apparent reason, they'd certainly stop you for taking in a device that could mess with the plane'e navigation systems.

Hi, future pilot here: It actually doesn't interfere with the navigation but interferes with the communication system. That's why we turn on airplane mode.

No. Your phone will probably not cause any issues. The engineers are very aware that people carry phones so most planes will be fine. Airplane mode is a precaution for old equipment and planes.

But you as a passenger don't usually know how modern a plane you are flying in is, so its best to just use airplane mode.

It’s worth noting that there has never been a crash before that was attributed to a device not on airplane mode, and that during cruise nothing would happen anyways, as you would be way to high up to get any signals on your device that could mess with the plane
