Why You Need Airplane Mode

It’s not dangerous at all, all it does is just drain your battery. Don’t make people scared to fly, I’m a pilot and I have left my own phone off airplane mode around 50-60% of the time, I understand when you don’t grasp a subject it can be hard to understand the little things of it, but don’t make it sound scary

*edit, okay I lied a little bit about this because I think fears of flying a completely irrational so there can be some interference but it doesn’t affect the pilots that much, also when you don’t grasp a subject your brain can take normal things and spin them so when someone says airplane mode is important people may take that as it’s dangerous if you leave it off, when it’s not. Even if that person is saying it in a completely normal way and not trying to make it sound dangerous. Your brain is your worst enemy.

This is all wrong, the cell phone can not cause issues with Flybywire systems, autopilot, RNAV/VNAV, or any ILS critical or navigation instruments. Do some research and dont try to scare people away from the safest mode of transportation.

I think it was in 1987 that I worked at a NATO Forward Scatter station. We sent signals close to 1GHz with a strength of 10kW up in the air. Some hundred kilometers away, another similar station used 10m diameter parabolic antennas to receive the "scattered" remnants of the signal bouncing of one of the layers in the atmosphere. One day all the alarms went off because a passenger plane crossed right through the beam, only about a 100 meters away (beautiful weather so the tower on Gardermoen had given the pilots free hands in how to approach (this was before Gardermoen was expanded and made into Oslo's main airport)). How was it possible for a modern jet airplane to survive a signal at 1GHz, 10kW going directly through the whole plane? This was close to the old NMT 900 frequencies, so all these stations were closed down a few years later.

Gotta stop you there, the gear doesn’t have to do ANYTHING at all with the cellphones cellular service. The only imaginable thing that could interfere with the plane would be the radio.

No. Mythbusters completely debunked this. They simulated something like 500 cell phones at once and it had ZERO effect on the electronics and avionics of the plane. All of those systems are shielded from electronic interference.

you are partially right, there's a chance that cellphone signals may cause interference with avionics, but the avionics are shielded so well that there's a very infinitesimally small chance that this would ever happen.

so you're asked to put your phone in airplane mode so that maybe you don't cause any issues that might occur once in billion.
