As a mom I put together a shoe bin size of all first aid and medicines for my daughter. HOWEVER, if you’re not taking vitamin C pills or chewable gummies- start a couple weeks before heading to college, and have plenty for the the rest of the semester. Take them every day. Also get yourself a couple containers of Lysol wipes and a spray Lysol! If you get sick spray EVERYTHING in the room that you or your room mate touch twice a day (morning and night) THREE days straight. Your “cold” will go away with this method. Also keep hydrated! Make sure you get all your doctor visits and dentist visits squared away BEFORE you leave, and make the follow up appointments for while your at home for holidays etc.

As a custodian of a college dorm in the Midwest, I appreciate that you keep it clean. We go into every room of every dorm and clean it in the summer. Walls, ceilings, doors, floors, furniture, it all gets cleaned. We have a hard time because a lot of students don't follow the rules and don't even sweep the floors when they leave, much less any other cleaning. I have spent hours cleaning candle or scent warmer wax that has stained walls and floors, mold in fridges, tape residue off of walls and a lot of college students have some serious issues with nose-picking. All over the walls. Gross! All of the very heavy, solid wood furniture is moved, wiped, and moved back after floors are stripped and waxed. Most buildings do not have AC. It's hot, heavy work when it's not made worse by students who don't give a second thought to the people who have to clean after them. During the school year we deal with vomit, students who don't flush toilets which is confusing to me because my three year old granddaughter flushes without reminders, urinating in the elevator, students dropping trash on the floor without picking it up and not cleaning up the kitchens when done with it. My goal is to clean so that I would be comfortable having my small grandchildren using the building and bathrooms. I want to be a blessing to the students but sometimes it's quite defeating to work so hard to only have a student come right behind me, drop a wrapper on the floor and keep walking, cook something in the kitchen and leave grease all over the stove and kitchen or go into a bathroom to find three toilets not flushed. I've also been blessed to be around when a student came running into her suite crying because she felt so alone. I was able to talk to her about what was going on, encourage her and make sure she was OK throughout the year. She was OK and finished the year. That's why I do what I do. To encourage. Having said all of that, parents, please physically show your teenager how to clean. How to wipe something, how to handle the line of dust the dustpan does not get, how to clean the shower curtain, to close the shower curtain after every shower so it can dry without mold and how to be considerate of both the others living in the dorms and those who are cleaning up after them. My boss reminded me that we are custodians not maids.

Y'all are the first people I've ever seen use apostrophes correctly in "dos and don'ts"!

i’ve been watching a lot of moving into dorm videos as of late, i’m going to a boarding school for the next three years until high school is finished. Can’t find any videos for boarding high school but college seems to work enough, thanks for helping out 😊

I went to college 50 years ago. Our rooms were cleaned every week, toilet paper, trash cans were provided. In room fridges, microwaves really weren’t around. Did have electric percolator pots and could make food in those. Our floors were tiled, built in desk. And 4 to a room. How things have changed!

Unfortunately my closet is so small (smaller than that) so I’ll have to get the hangers that go down cuz otherwise I have no room

But this was a super helpful guide! I’m going shopping/meeting my roommate for the first time for college in 2 days so I was able to add a few things to my list!

My younger niece just moved into the dorm for her first year at university. It will be interesting to see what she ends up keeping through to the end of the year and what comes home on visits.

She also put up the strings of fairy lights.

Paid extra for a single room during freshman year. It's worth it. No roommate drama or getting sexiled.
