I've been a medical biller for 5 years and I can relate when you said "finding out someone makes more money than you do". My coworker (who I trained and started 2 years after I did), she was making around 70k and here I was feeling stupid making less when she told me. I felt so embarrassed to even tell her how much I was making. I asked for a raise and I guess because of my age (I'm 25) they think I'm cheap labor and don't know any better. I've been the youngest since day one. haha and my boss literally told me they can't match my salary because I don't have enough experience.. I don't understand how I don't have experience if I have 5 years experience on the job and tasked to training newbies 😂 ... I'm telling you... that SAME day I found out the salary differences... I called AAPC and signed up for the CPC courses. Moving on from biller to coder. I'm coming out stronger 💪💪 .. after my cpc, my goal is to work on my auditing cert.. and to find another job of course lol 😂

I’ve been an inpatient medical coder with a RHIT for over 12 yrs and I was getting paid much less than I should have until I got a job at a different hospital. My experience meant nothing to my previous employer and they offered to pay me what I wanted only after submitting my resignation.

Salary is key to deciding if it's worth getting started or not. Seeing a lot of jobs online for medical billers with a coding cert for $15 per hour, that's a really low wage. Okay for entry level but aweful for experienced workers. Cannot pay rent on that low wage, in most cities.

I have been working in a call center since 2018 but I’ve changed departments due to them closing it.
I have worked for Silverscript insurance and CVs mail order as well as (OTC) program and now I am working for Cigna Medicare part D. I am familiar with different insurance’s and how they process certain paperwork. I do day to day pharmacy tech/customer service things for members. I would love to get my foot in the door for coding now❤

A few days ago, my friend suggested that I take a community college course for medical coding. Of course, my friend made it all sound a lot easier than it actually is, but after diving into a few of your videos, I'm starting to genuinely consider taking the courses now. I'm just too worried about whether or not I can actually handle it. I took a semester of Sports Medicine my junior year of high school (a decade ago) and only took a semester of college with my only non-general courses were Accounting 101 and Introduction to Micro Economics, and that was five years ago. I did well enough in those courses to make the Dean's List, but I'm still nervous about jumping into anything medical, even though I know I enjoyed the Sports Medicine course in high school a lot, and did really well in the class. As someone who's spent their entire adult life doing food service and dishwashing, medical coding looks like a tall mountain. It's amazing to view from afar, but the idea of climbing it is terrifying. I just wish I could overcome that fear and go for it.

I live in Virginia & one of the largest medical facilities that owns so much in my area only pays around $12.00-$13.00 an hour. This very large medical corporation cannot keep employees because of this & they have a super high constant turnover with staff. Even with college they will if you strongly negotiate & give the max of $15.00 an hour. But, that's rare. It's pathetic. They pay nothing into your benefits either which are high just for health insurance.

Just going through your videos before I pay for my class in March. I was stuck between Phlebotomy tech and Coding forgetting that I took 3 to 4 computer classes at a time in High school so why not go with what I know first🥳 then go back for Phlebotomy!! I love your channel 💙💙

Hmm, Both Salary Scales from AHIMA and AAPC seem significantly higher than job openings I have seen on Indeed and Job searching sites . I am classified as a Coder 3 but my title is based on my years of experience instead of holding different certifications. I do have 26 yrs of Acute Hospital Inpatient Coding and a CCS and my salary was nowhere close to AHIMA's pay scale. My fellow Co- workers also have either RHIT and Or CCS and at least 10yrs of Coding Experience an also fall way below the pay scale. I don't live in a Rural area either . Just wondering how AHIMA and AAPC came out with their average salary payscales.

I've been in the medical billing and coding field for 27 years. I learned all my skills on the job. Seminars, talking with physicians, learning medical records. I'm not certified, but I've got the experience. But none of that mattered if they saw you weren't certified, unfortunately. I did get hired by a reputable company that was impressed by my experience and didn't require me to be certified. So the breaks are out there.

In India, big shot MNC companies pay peanuts to highly efficient certified candidates and the work load is mountain high.

I like this video!! I completely agree you with you on the certification vs experience thing. It was trendy at one point to get your MHA, BAS or AAS. But like other profession's it became saturated and everyone who had those degrees wanted to be compensated for those degrees (Rightfully so). The thing is this is a more experience driven field. Your degree helps you out more once you gain the right amount of experience.

This video was very insightful and helpful, you help me decide what coding certification I need to pursue. I was thinking about RHIT or RHIA (after a couple of unsuccessful attempts) but I saw those salaries and I think I am going for CCS now and I am currently scheduled to take my CPC next month and I already have a associates and bachelors in HIM.

13 years of experience at 38 gives me such hope. Just turned 26 and I’m looking into this career path, happy to see I haven’t started too late :’)

Hey, I love your videos on medical coding, it's helping me comb through the things I should do to land my first job in the field.
Question though, I know how important having some experience can have on the odds of me landing my first job.
My question is, if I work at a company as a "Claims Representative" will this count as experience when I do obtain my certification and want to start applying for jobs as a medical coder?
