What is bedwetting?

Bedwetting is also called sleep enuresis. It is a parasomnia. A parasomnia involves undesired events that come along with sleep. Bedwetting occurs when a person urinates by accident in his or her sleep.

It results from a failure to wake up from sleep when the bladder is full. It may also result from a failure to prevent a bladder contraction. These are skills that you acquire as you grow and develop.
There is a wide range in the age at which these skills are gained. Urinating is a reflex for infants when they are asleep and awake. This occurs up to about 18 months of age.

From 18 months to about three years of age, a child begins learning to delay urination when the bladder is full. First the child learns to do this while awake. At a later age, he learns to do this while asleep. The developmental maturity of the child will help determine the age at which this skill is gained. Most children should be able to control their bladders during sleep by the time they are about five years of age. Thus, bedwetting is not considered a sleep disorder unless it occurs at least twice a week in a person at least five years of age.

Bedwetting can be primary or secondary. A child with primary bedwetting has never regularly stayed dry during sleep for six straight months. A child or adult with secondary bedwetting developed the ability to stay dry at night and has done so for at least 6 straight months. Then he or she began bedwetting again at least twice a week for at least three months. Generally secondary bedwetting is simply another parasomnia expressing. They may have had any one of several symptoms, such as:

Bruxism, sleep walking, restless leg syndrome etc. Their sleep disorder is now expressing in a different manner.

This is the reason parents are told “Don’t worry, they’ll outgrow it” They haven’t outgrown the parasomnia, it is still there only expressing in a different manner.

I used to have dreams for a few months, in dreams I was in the bathroom and used to urinate, but in reality I was on the bed and urine also used to pass on the bed itself. My wife was very upset due to this problem of mine. I feel very ashamed but no medicine was working for me Then my wife ordered Utrason syrup and Branacon syrup online for me My bedwetting was completely cured by this medicine, now even when I have dreams, I do not urinate on the bed.

Hi parents i know it can be frustrating when your older child still wets their bed. Be patient and be kind to your child, they are not stupid and they will come over this.

I randomly started wetting the bed 4 times the past 3 weeks and I never had before I had my blood checked a month or two ago and did not have diabetes Should I be nervous

Pooing 4 times a day?! Come on, seriously. We’re all different but I would say the most common norm would be once a day…

I’m 14 .and I still do it .I swear I’m tired of this I’m always trying to not drink before bedtime, and I still don’t stop it’s, always making me cry or say a bad words about myself.(sorry if my English is bad cuz it’s not my first language ).!

I have no dreams, I try not to drink anything near bedtime and stuff yet it still happens, it stopped for some time then started back up frequently

My sis has given up trying to get her kids to stop wetting the bed; they go and get their own pull ups to wear every night. I want to help her but I'm not sure how to even ask her about the problem, what's going on and why she thinks it's happening.

WHAT’S THIS THING CALLED SLEEP ??

Adults spend about one-third of their day sleeping, or 7 to 9 hours. There are 2 types of sleep: Rapid-eye movement (REM), when most dreams occur Non-REM, which has 3 stages, including the deepest sleep During normal sleep, a person cycles through REM and non-REM stages several times during the night. Each cycle lasts about 90 minutes, but the amount of non-REM versus REM sleep changes throughout the night. More REM sleep tends to occur toward the morning. REM sleep first occurs about 90 minutes after falling asleep and accounts for less than one-fourth of total sleep time. Most dreams occur during REM sleep. The eyes move fast from side-to-side under the eyelids. Brain wave activity, heart rate, and blood pressure increase close to rates when awake. Breathing becomes faster and inconsistent. Arm and leg muscles become temporarily paralyzed so you cannot act out your dreams.

Older people spend less time in the REM stage. Sleep disorders disrupt these normal cycles which in turn causes other health problems. Both REM and non-REM sleep are needed to stay healthy. Delta (deep sleep) is the physically restorative phase of sleep. REM (rapid eye movement) is where we achieve our emotional sleep.

Stanford University's William Dement, MD, PhD, who many refer to as the “father of sleep medicine.” Identified many of the common "Sleep Disorders" back in the mid '80s: Sleep disorders:
Nocturnal enuresis, Bruxism, Central Sleep Apnea, Circadian Rhythm Hypersomnia, Narcolepsy, Night Terrors, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, REM Sleep Behavior Disorder, Sleepwalking, Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders, Sleep-Related Movement Disorder, Sleep Paralysis. These are all PARASOMNIAS!!
National Geographic, Dec. 1987 featured William Dement in an article Called “What’s this thing called sleep”.

The latter part of our sleep cycle, if we are sleeping normally, is in REM (RAPID EYE MOVEMENT)  That is when you can leap out of bed and say “Wow, great sleep” I feel terrific. If you awaken someone who is in Delta, slow wave sleep it may take a while to get their motors running, they are usually very groggy.

The Delta waves get even stronger in this period. For that reason this stage is sometimes referred to as Delta Sleep. Generally, it is in this stage that sleepwalking and bed-wetting occur. An individual with a sleep disorder may experience a rapid REM rise (red on the chart) that only lasts for 20-90 seconds. That is not long enough to attain wakefulness. They may dream they are in the bathroom and void in the bed. Some individuals will never wet the bed, however a sleep disorder may express as night terrors, bruxism (grinding the teeth), restless leg syndrome, sleep talking, sleep apnea.

Sleep begins in stages 1 and 2, (theta sleep) the blue line on the chart and then progresses to 3 and 4, (delta). After stage 4 sleep is complete, stage 3 and then stage 2 are repeated before entering REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is where we dream. Once REM sleep is over, the body usually returns to stage 2. We then cycle through these stages approximately four or five times throughout the night. During the last one or two cycles, there is no delta (deep sleep) sleep at all.
