Propagate your fig tree using cuttings

Показать описание
In this video I go into a lot of detail about taking fig tree cuttings, or propagating your figs, how to prepare cuttings and plant them to propagate your fig trees or favourite varieties.
Taking cuttings from your favourite fig tree, or a variety go fig that you don't have is the easiest and most reliable way of propagating a fig tree. When you have your lovely new cuttings there are some very important things to consider to make sure your cuttings strike and you don't lose them to known issues.
Some things to consider when taking and planting your cuttings:
1. Time of the year: You need to take your cuttings when the fig tree is dormant about to start pushing out new growth. as the buds begin to swell before spring is a great time.
2. Length of cutting: Make sure your cuttings are long and thick enough. You want your cuttings to be at least 15cm long, or long enough so 3 buds can be planted under the soil, and no thinner than a pencil.
3. Soil mix: To avoid fungal and bacterial issues I only use Coco Coir to strike my cuttings. This provides even and consistent moisture in a ph neutral and sterile environment.
4. NB - make sure you cover the top of soil with at least 1cm of river sand once the cutting is planted to avoid gnats and other bugs/worms from getting to the fragile new roots.
5. Store the cuttings in a humid and warm location and make sure you regularly allow fresh air in to avoid mould and fungal issues.
