My grandmother used to take cuttings of various trees here when she visited, she would take cuttings, wrap them in plastic, and when she got home she had mayo and peanut butter jars she would fill with water about 1/3 of the way, cover the top with plastic wrap, then stick a cutting in each jar. She then covered the jar as high as the water with aluminum foil or paper to block out light from the roots. She had almost 100% success by what I could tell. Most of the trees here came from her cuttings 60 years ago that she would take from all over. She even would snip cuttings off house plants and trees while on vacation where ever she was and sneak them home wrapped up inside of books and even her clothes packed with her luggage. My aunt and uncle brought back several fig tree cuttings from their honeymoon in Egypt back in the 60's. They hollowed out a bible from the hotel where they stayed, soaking the pages and wrapping it in foil and in a plastic bag. By the time they got home nearly all the cuttings they took had rooted. One still grows in my back yard, two cousins of mine still have theirs and one still grows in the backyard of my grandparent's old house in Phila.

A little tip: cut the fruits as early as possible. They are draining the little energy remaining in those cuttings. The fruit will never develop properly anyway.

Thanks for the short. I just realized this was even a possibility. I'm disabled and haven't had the health to do air layering. I'm finally getting better after some hard fought battles and I will post to shut the haters up. God Bless

Hello..Can you please tell me what zone you are in as I'm in the UK and its generally very cold. I would like to know when your mom did this, as in when did you film this? I've just cut a big branch today from my parents home to do the same thing 🤞 I'm in USDA zone 8b and the ground has just stopped freezing at night. Look forward to your response 👍🏼

The fact that the cuttings are already growing figs is not a good thing. They need to concentrate nutrients and energy into a strong root structure. Growing fruit/seeds already is a survival mechanism for the plant. It is stressed and thinks it needs to reproduce before dying.

How long did they take to start rooting in the water?

How did this turn out?
I always found water roots are weaker and suffer when moved to soil.

@movingtorichmondva Sweet! Yeah, I noticed figs are pretty resilient and a
invigorating fruit to propagate the respond very well!
I just did the same thing with the water and got the same result.
Only that I put mine in a pot with dirt. After watching a video on how much better they do in well watered dirt. Not so sure I should’ve switched into seeing roots but we’ll see in a couple weeks.😂

Would crating a propagation box and doing this on any hardwood side shoot work to make a cutting
I have tried to make cuttings for my farm (I did it in the seedling tray ) with low success
Would this be better

Super. But better take off these fruits, because they will exxhaust the cutting's energy, which is supposed to go to the new roots.
