I tried substitute teaching for one day after college. I knew right then and there I wanted no part of teaching.

I teach high school health and P.E in Baltimore City. I currently make $58, 898. Baltimore City has also increased the salary cap for teachers up to $100k+. Given the fact that I am only in my second year of teaching in this district, I have holidays, and Summers off, and great insurance... it's definitely not a bad position in my opinion. I enjoy being able to do my own work on the side and not being entirely tied down with one occupation all the time.

We need to stand with all our teachers and hear what they need, so they can continue to teach the future generations! Support teachers and teachers unions 💪🏼

Ok to you all that are saying that’s a lot and they thought teachers weren’t getting this. Teachers said they want more, not that they are making minimum wage. Some people are acting like they get $10 an hour lol.

These are all relatively new teachers! I live in DC and have been teaching for over 10 years with two graduate degrees and earn over $100k—because we simply couldn’t afford to live here without a normal professional salary! First-year teachers with a bachelor’s degree start at $63k in DC. If teachers have to take on a second job or if they worry about finances in addition to teaching challenging curricula and literally helping to raise someone else’s child for 7 hours a day (how many parents sit with their kids 7 hours a day? Thank you!), they need to resign and move to a district/city/state that pays them a respectable professional salary. Full stop.

They also get a pension that's worth 30k extra A year they don't have to save for future like rest of us.

I know veteran teachers in the DMV that make well over 150K. If they hang in there, they will see higher salaries within a few years.

It’s not really being paid enough but the expectations of buying class materials when that should be on the school themselves. I believe teachers can write off a certain amount but this should be included in a package as well.

Having worked variety of jobs I’ve come to realize most teachers are taught to think they are under compensated but have not work in other industries that are high. Given the 180 day a year schedule teachers in reality make about 50 bucks an hour and other professions I consider more stress work year round for what equates to a lot lower hourly pay without the multiple breaks or great schedule …. But job satisfaction is always in the eye of the beholder….

Where do these people teach? I live with a teacher that has taught for 30+ years and she doesn't get paid close to $64k.

70k is definitely enough for a teacher. They also get a lot of time off.

That's at least a rack a week for each of them, and if you can't get by on that, then you might be living above your means... BUT... The DMV is crazy expensive, so I bet they are all just making it, unless they have a partner that has an income also.

Then again, that's just about everywhere these days.

I can concur with teachers making more money though, if there are performance standards and no tenure.

Being a teacher is a part time job. Everything is online these days with homework and tests. They get more days off than anyone else.

60K for a first year is fine. My best friend is in her 5 year and she's still getting paid in the low 60K. When she asks for a raise they tall her they don't have the money, and frankly it's believable considering the state of the equipment they give the kids, and teacher shortage the school is experiencing, all of which can be tied back to Trumps defining of the Department of Education
