Here's how much money I make as a substitute teacher in Texas and my advice on becoming a sub.

I was a substitute teacher from April 2019- March 2020 (when schools closed because of the virus). I subbed for grades 5-12 for all subjects, general and special education.

In Sydney (Australia), a substitute gets $373 (US$277) a day for a beginning teacher or $450 (US$334) for an experienced teacher. Even with these rates, our schools are still short on substitutes. It is utterly shameful to pay teachers so poorly and governments wonder why there is a global teacher shortage.

In Ohio, after paying into STRS Ohio, I made $10.03 an hour (or roughly 13/hr without being forced to pay into that). That's with a Bachelor's degree (required in Ohio) and for a school district I myself graduated from. My district is DESPERATE for subs, yet we are still insanely underpaid. For the next 90 days (if I worked every single day which is a real possibility in the time of Rona), I would make roughly $6, 500. For a full year that would be equal to the federal poverty line.

In 2004 I began my first job at a Best Buy and made $9.50 as a cashier. I was a kid with a crappy Grand Am and made nearly what I do now, 18 years later. Do not hesitate to get a second or third job. I have a student in one of my classes that works at our McDonald's and makes more than me currently. But why continue? This question keeps me up at night constantly.

Can’t wait till you talk about your process becoming a certified teacher, I’m in the same boat as you exactly so it be good to hear I’m another perspective on the transition.

This is 2022, October and I live in CA (LAUSD) and the pay rate is $212, and $283 incentive pay rate. There is a teacher shortage going on right now so subs are making good money

I'm so happy I found your channel. My first major at the last college I attended was journalism. I was about to run out of undergrad finical aide and I had a work study in the education office. This past Spring I graduated with an online bachelors degree in instructional studies which is an education degree. Everyone in the department was super helpful and it was a really good education. I actually still talk to my old advisor and one of my old co-workers. So right now I work in a library because a lot of the jobs that I can get are with elementary school aged children. I don''t mind them but I'd rather teach high school. So I plan on working at the library since I am full time and possibly going for my masters degree in secondary education. I will also be taking the English Test for grades 7-12 so I might be able to teach middle school if I'm not ready for high school teaching straight out of the gate. I love the education field and I have thought of subbing so we'll see thank you for this!

I am in California and in the city I live in any type of sub gets paid $115 for elementary and middle school $125. For my high school district its $27 dollars an hour. But it also varies between the districts in my school. The cool thing is that I can sub for as many districts as I want.

Wow that's crazy. I live in CA and we get paid $34 an hour for 6 hours of work. Long term assignments pay $45 an hour. We do need to have a bachelor's degree and pass a basic educator's exam (CBEST). After 100 days of work we get full benefits the following school year. However, our cost of living is CRAZY!!!

Good video and sub work was the idea that I had to get more experience to make sure that teaching was the right path for me.

Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge. I was thinking about becoming a substitute teacher but I'm afraid it will not be enough to pay bills. Thank you for your honesty. I also recently moved to West Texas this past year.

No way!!! 😱 my school district pays $150 a day and after 30 working days we get $233. This last year if you worked 600 and some hours you qualified for medical and dental for $95 or so a month. I’m from WA state 🤗

I’m in Texas too, central Texas, and seeing this was made 2 years ago, the sub teachers only increased an extra $20 only. I wish the sub rate was a lil more. I know at one point, I heard it was around $180-200 per day.

It may pay well, but it's not worth the stress and anxiety. I can't stand it. I'm an ESOL paraeducator and I'm constantly pulled to sub. I can barely help my ESOL kids.. it's a loss of services and I wonder if the school can get in trouble for that.

Hi! I’ve been watching a lot of your videos recently! I’m from Illinois and just graduated in May with a journalism degree. Have had no luck finding any job or internship so my mom recommended subbing. I just started this week and I love it but I have no idea what I want to do with my life/degree!

Hi thank you so much for the information! I am a sub in Canada and the pay is a bit better here. As a first year sub you get payed 200 dollars a day Canadian after tax and deductions or about 157 dollars USD. However to be a sub in Canada you have to be a certified teacher.

So, $10 an hour? Taco bell making $12.50 . I see why teachers are marching in the streets here in NC.

8 years ago I subbed in northern AZ for $75/day. It was only a part time as I had 2-3 weekdays off from my regular job. I was promoted and now I'm "forced" into Sat Sun off. Funny to say that, but I miss my weekdays off and subbing.
In Texas, do subs pay social security? Or can they contribute to TRS? Same question for any other states where teachers don't pay into SS.
Finally, I'm a long haired guy who has somewhat started the Curly Girl Method. I'm a big fan of Curly Suzie. I'll have to check out your videos.
