To clarify, South Korea does provide payslips, although they are not given monthly. Instead, there is a dedicated website where you can access payslips for all your previous work periods. However, it's not common for people to track them regularly. In South Korea, South Africans are exempt from paying taxes for the first two years of living there. Many individuals come to Korea for two years, earn money, and then leave. Alternatively, you can choose to stay longer, as I have for five years, and I have only started paying taxes in the last three years, which amount to R1, 250 per month. I believe this is reasonable. Moreover, after five years, our salaries do increase annually, and there are bonuses as well. It's not necessary to teach at just one school either. Currently, I teach at three schools, with varying weekly schedules. On top of these benefits, South Korea covers 50% of our medical aid costs and offers severance pay. Despite having no teaching experience in South Africa, I earn significantly more than a woman who has been working there for 30 years, and the cost of living in Korea is relatively inexpensive. In fact, I am able to save a substantial amount each month, sending home 1.5 million Korean won, which translates to R21, 000, and comfortably living on the remainder of my salary. Hence, I still believe that South Korea offers favorable conditions. While I don't intend to make comparisons, I hope this clarifies any confusion. I worked in China before covid for an adult teaching center. My salary was 16k RMB (roughly x2 for Rands). Got laid off during the lock down, came home, now working at a school as a contact teacher. My nett salary is roughly R27k - R29k. Can't wait to get back abroad because I've since bought a house and surviving SA in SA is rather challenging. Inflation and the repo rate is not a joke

Hi Boni, thank you for this! I am currently a teacher with 5 years experience in the EC, so the payslips I have seen seem accurate. One thing I notice though it seems like the level of education doesn’t count much when it come to growth in this field, more weight goes to experience.

Post level is not according to qualification. Post Level 1 is educator, PL2 is Head of Department, PL3 is Deputy Principal, PL4 is Principal.

My heart bleeds for educators, because these people are our pillars and asset of this country, but they get paid bare minimum. Like what the hell? If I’d become a president, I’d really improve education sector.
And parents expect educators to be super heroes but 😢… ay let me stop I’m agitated.

Even though they are not less than R20k but that’s not much if you have 5 years and more experience in the field. They pretty much earn the same regardless of experience which is so unfair. I can’t imagine having more than 5 years yet earning the same as someone who has a 1st year experience in the same field.

She earns what seems to be a low salary after so many years because of her diploma qualification. There was a time when teachers with that qualification had to upgrade to ACE and study further.

This is my 8th year in Korea and having taught in public schools, private public schools and academies, contracts differ vastly for everyone. Smaller cities or the country side tend to be cheaper than the bigger cities, but cost of living is generally high. The downside to esl teaching in Korea is that they’ve increased their requirements while cutting down on perks and salaries. Salaries have been stagnant for over 10 years now. Many people here work for 2 or 3 years then move to China or UAE (if they’re qualified teachers). Side note: annual increases are also not guaranteed, most people don’t get them. Really depends on your school/contract.

Maybe you should make a similar video for Interns in SA, maybe same fields different provinces or something. So many of 22-30 year olds have no clue or experience but are willing to get internships but are not motivated enough with the walled garden of pay being a secret. Not sure why people hide that info I feel like you're not the only one on earth with that job. I can happily share my payslip as communications intern at the department of education. Your videos are very educational and informative and if there's any way I can contribute to sharing knowledge or insight, I'd like to.

Government needs to incentivise educators and have performance perks. Unions will kill that idea though.

Hi, this breaks my heart. I have been teachig for 15 years, its sad to be teaching in the Eastern Cape. We leave from hand to mouth, it's ridiculous.

Boney, in South Africa you should not forget that they have pension whereby the employer matches what the teacher contribute. Also teachers get 67% subsidy on medical aid i they are with gems, meaning they pay only one third. While it may seemlike the foreign based teachers are earning more, the south african teachers are having many benefits. If you can do QUALITATIVE comparison you may find the real difference. Salary only comparisons may not give the true picture. I CHALLENGE YOU to look deeper.

Hi Sis Boni, with regards to differences in tax deductions, there’s an option of “tax on bonus” where you decide if they will charge your bonus tax every month throughout the year only on the month you receive your bonus, but in this case, that deduction was still too high

These teachers salaries are confusing me, so it doesn’t matter if have 8 years or 2 months experience, your take home will still land at R20-R22k

Someone please explain
