Rallying originally began life as simple road races, and it wasn't until the 1960s that it became a sport in its own right. The first professional rally drivers arrived and brought a totally different level of driving style to the world.
We had to wait until 1973 before the World Championship was created, and that was just for the manufacturers. The drivers championship didn't come until 1979. But the most memorable change came in 1982 with the introduction of the legendary Group B class which, to this day, produced some of the most iconic rally cars.
There were barely any rules, which left manufacturers with the freedom to create the most powerful cars the World Rally Championship has ever seen. These cars now hold almost mythical status among rally fans around the world, and here are a selection of our favourites including the Audi Quattro, Lancia Stratos, Lancia Delta, Peugeot 205 T16 and the Renault 5 Turbo.

The group B rally cars was the best of what every manufacturer could do which I imagine advanced certainly rally but all motorsport starting with audi and there 4 wheel drive system being revolutionary. I think the FIA and FIM should let manufacturers have more freedom to make machines with less restrictions and who knows what kind of monsters may be cooked up

I don't see it getting mentioned enough, the Metro 6R4 was engineered by Williams at their peak. It's engine eventually finding it's way into a road car in the shape of the Jaguar XJ220, which then briefly help the title of the fastest production car of all time, until the McLaren F1 happened.

Great montage, but too short :DDDD Personally I think that it should be underlined, that the Lancia 037 was the last single axel drive car to win a Championship. Only FWD Citroen Xsara and Renault Megane MAXI could do such a think, but only on asfalt. Cheers!
