Joe Walsh is a thorough gentleman and simply humble. Humble to the core. Whatever may have affected him in between, he remains polite, sincere and knows how to 'laugh at himself'!

Further to Joe's Les Paul story about multi-track recording, I believe that Bing Crosby gave Les Paul his first reel-to-reel tape recorder one Christmas when they were just coming onto the home market. Les wrote to the manufacturer of the recorder and asked for another recording head (saying that the other was broken) and they sent him another one out. He installed the new head in the machine (so it now had two heads) and thus inventing multi-track recording as we know it.

The "humbucking coil" was invented in 1934 by Electro-Voice, Ray Butts got the first patent for this coil application for pickup puposes [but Seth Lover was working on his version at the same time]. A successful early humbucking pickup was the so-called PAF (literally "Patent Applied For") invented by Seth Lover in 1955. Because of this, and because of its use on the Gibson Les Paul guitar, Although humbuckers have been used in many different guitar designs by many different manufacturers,

humbucking pickup was invented by Joseph Raymond "Ray" Butts, but Seth Lover of Gibson was also working on one himself. Ray Butts initially developed one on his own and later worked with Gretsch. Who developed it first is a matter of some debate, but Ray Butts was awarded the first patent (U.S. Patent 2, 892, 371) and Seth Lover came next (U.S. Patent 2, 896, 491). Ultimately, both men developed essentially the same concept, but Ray Butts was never recognized as the one who produced it first.

I know this is old and there've been a bunch of contributions as to who invented what. The solidbody concept was pioneered by Les Paul, but not exclusively. There were others concurrently working on that, including Paul Bigsby. The Gibson Les Paul guitar was designed by Ted McCarty of Gibson, not Les Paul. And - I have an article in a book called "The Guitar Player Book" (Grove Press) contributed by Seth Lover wherein he mentions several earlier patents going back into the 1930s. But Joe ROCKS!

Walsh is a great guy and a great musician/writer. However - Les Paul did not invent the humbucker pickup. A guy names Seth Lover did.

Sorry but Les Paul did not invent the humbucker pickup. The Gibson Les Paul was the 1st gtr to use the humbucker in substantial production. (Seth Lover and the PAF) But it was invented in the early '30s. by Electro-Voice, and in 1938 A.F. Knoblaugh invented a pickup for stringed instruments involving 2 stacked coils for pianos.

In all fairness, it must be said that the first patented humbucking pickup was in fact invented by Ray Butts, who worked for Gretsch Guitars. In 1954, Butts developed what would eventually become the Filtertron humbucking pickup for Chet Atkins, who was unhappy with the hum produced by the single coil pickups in his Gretsch 6210. The Filtertron came first, and the proof is in the patent numbers.

Wanna correct somethin here. Seth Lover actually invented the paf humbucker, but the filter ton pickup was actually the first humbucking pickup. Awesome seminar nonetheless, just wanna correct Joe Walsh on this one

A nice part of the internet, and one missing dearly, just artists taking time to help. We all know Eric Clapton is great, etc, but no offense I could never see him doing this. Like Joe says he is a regular guy, pick up his dog poop in his yard, and is just so solid. i'm not a huge Eagles guy, but Joe is as good as they come, and maybe the reason He can cope so well sober, and Eric, while a very nice guy, seems to not be able to improvise or play as well is personality? Post 2000 EC that is.
