Protectionism | The American Ideal

Most American politicians today, both Republican and Democrat, have used the concepts of American freedom and capitalism to justify a policy of free trade. What is free trade, and how does it effect the United States, you might ask. Simply, it is trade between nations with little if any restrictions in place; in capitalist argument, it is the natural progression of the free market beyond the limits of the state. It is, however, a tremendous folly taken on the part of the US, whose economy is not suited for the system of free trade. What is the alternative to free trade then? The system under which America's economy has grown most prosperous and powerful, Protectionism. What is Protectionism? As the name suggests, protectionism emphasizes the protecting of domestic industry, agriculture, and business, while subjecting foreign imports to heavy tariffs and regulations to ensure they cannot outcompete local businesses. Protectionism means more (and better paying) local jobs, more American made products, and more self sufficiency for the United States and its citizens. This is Protectionism, the American ideal.

I have been expressing this exact sentiment since I was in high school in the 90's. We've have drifted a long way from the USA our grand parents left for us.

THANK YOU! Finally someone has put forward an explanation to what Americans as a whole have been asking for for two generations. Z, you’ve done a fabulous job making this topic completely non-partisan, as it SHOULD be!

One of the great tragedies of world history is the deliberate deindustrialization of the United States.
Grew up near Flint MI in the 1980s and saw the devastation first hand, dammit.

This tragedy was made obvious to all when, at the hight of Covid, we couldn't provide enough medical equipment because we no longer produced the vast majority of it.

My uncle used to have a great job at a factory where I'm from. The factory was sold to Mexico and moved at some point, leaving the town to struggle to survive on logging. It didn't last long. Now my uncle just works in a tobacco store to make ends meet.

I mean, makes sense to me. I don't understand why someone would willingly agree with deindustrialization, coming from an American perspective that as. I know devil's advocate says that foreign workers need the money more than we do, but it's honestly just a white = rich mindset with most of those people. Growing up in the midwest, poverty is rampant, and dreams are crushed pretty quickly out of school for most people, so they settle into what they think will make them happy, being a parent. Its really the only thing most people can do to find happiness since their careers and such were pulled out from under them. Really sad stuff, but this video covers, in such short a time, the underlying issue leading to most of the poverty in those areas.

I think this is one of the main issues with capitalism. It focuses so much on GDP and economic growth instead of focusing on national development on a social and cultural scale. The first world has basically exported their industry overseas to use cheap labour for increased profits, ultimately at the expense of their own citizens

I can only take so much basedness at once, Mr Z!

I love the typical neo con response of "well muh dun products now cheaper" as if shoes costing a few bucks less makes up for the devastation that deindustrialization has caused

It really frustrates me to see so many abandoned factories in what they call the richest nation on Earth.

"Well we're waiting here in Allentown
For the Pennsylvania we never found
For the promises our teachers gave
If we worked hard
If we behaved
So the graduations hang on the wall
But they never really helped us at all
No they never taught us what was real
Iron and coal
And chromium steel
And we're waiting here in Allentown" - Billy Joel

Reminder that across the 19th and early 20th centuries the US had the highest tariffs in the world (not every year but across that time period) precisely the time period when the US became ascendant in the world

To quote my history teacher, "America is such an industrial machine that they could block everyone out and still beat them all."

"Free trade! Free trade! The call for free trade, is as unavailing as the cry of a spoiled child, in its nurse's arms, for the moon or the stars that glitter in the firmament of heaven. It never has existed; it never will exist." - Henry Clay, 1832

As a european, I support this. All products bought from China strengthens its authoritarian regime. Western countries should do what they can to support each other because they all value things such as freedom of speech and democracy
