Free trade is a fable. Large companies receive all types of help from the us govt.

We are repeating evil, instead of listening to those who've been there before

Let's see how well this aged when a pandemic taught us that our economy was decimated by no longer manufacturing things in America. The party that supports the military but outsources everything that America use to dominate in manufacturing.

It took me awhile before I understood what Reagan said. Mostly, because I never saw him in a t-shirt, and reminded me of my grandfather.

Imagine that: the most admired President since Dwight Eisenhower arose from a Hollywood actor, and not a very distinguished actor at that. And he rose to greatness. America was a wonderful country and we can be wonderful once again. We must cast off progressivism and embrace one again freedom and tradition. And a leader...Tim Scott? Tom Cotton, Ron De Santis? Mike Pence? There are a couple on the Democrat side, but neither has any hope of being chosen by that party. It must be someone from the right... we'll see. The next few years will be so interesting...I hope I'm still here to see them.

One of the truly bad things President Reagan did was to kill the independent American trucker.

I think the gripper is wrong about this one. We should always put American business ahead of foreign companies

Too bad there are no US footwear manufacturers anymore. How do you protect an industry that took your shit overseas?

And look how our industry has suffered

Then why was US growth greatest in the 19th Century, when tariffs were at their peak? Why did growth slow from the 1980s onwards when protectionism and unilateral quota agreements were abandoned? Free trade is no silver bullet and the case against tariffs has been overstated.

And look what happened to the shoe industry in America! It's almost non existent.

I agree with Ronald about paying companies protection money is bad idea but I disagree with him that protection is a bad thing (I realize clip is too short for that). Protection of national companies should be at the import border with additional taxes against foreign extra cheap products which are intending to bankrupt national producers, therefore destroy nation's economy. That's where protection should be enforced. What do you guys think? Better ideas?
Because I'm thinking how Chinese companies took over drug industry in USA by flooding it with super cheap products and once USA factories have closed then they raised up their prices again. Big downside after that, is the USA dependence on Chinese drugs...
