How to Repair a Ceiling Fan LED Light - how to replace a broken Harbor Breeze or Hampton Bay light

In this video I show you how to repair a broken LED light in a ceiling fan. I have a Harbour Breeze Mazon fan and the lights in these often fail. But replacing the LED light is actually pretty easy to do if you are confident with electrics and DIY.

A faulty light is very annoying, so do something and fix it! Just watch this video to learn how to do it.

Replacing the light kit: A lot of people have complained that the LED lights burn out. Replacement light kits aren't available from Harbor Breeze. I wanted to investigate this further and show people how to repair it themselves. The light kit runs on AC power, at 120V, maximum 18W. The original light has a color temperature of 3000K (soft white), and the output is 950 lumens. If you want to try and DIY a replacement search online for "LED light engine retrofit kit for ceiling fan". Make sure that it's for 120V AC power, and no more than 18W power! Also make sure it's "dimmable" otherwise it will flicker if you try and dim it. Finally, the existing module is 4.5" diameter, so you'll need to find one around that size, and certainly no bigger than 5". Please remember, I'm not an electrician and if you aren't, consider hiring one.

Like Richie Friedman, we’ve been without a light in one of the bedrooms for a year. Moved in and realized it was inoperable. Easy fix, right? I’ve been looking for a direct fit replacement and today I finally YouTubed it. I’ll let you know how it goes! The local big box hardware store told me i needed an entire replacement ceiling fan! I knew there had to be someone out there that knew better. Thanks!

You make it look much easier than it was but I am so happy I had success! I had little experience with wiring and I had to watch some additional videos on that whole subject. This process was time consuming even just finding the correct light and size. Since they don’t sell replacement lights Lowe’s told me I can bring the fan in and they would replace it but that seemed even more complicated. Thanks so much!

Thank you for this video. I was confused why the bulb stopped working...it has been less than a year that we have had this fan. I'm not sure I would purchase another LED ceiling fan.

This is so ridiculous that one should have to do this when one buys a ceiling fan / light. Never again. Standard bulbs from now on. Don’t buy this junk if Harbor Breeze can’t support it. This is the 2nd time for me. Had to junk the first pair of fans because the LED’s weren’t available. I made the mistake of assuming a reputable brand like HB, as well as Lowe’s would offer replacements.
These light kits don’t last that long either.

Does anyone know how to convert this atrocity into a regular twist bulb?

Update...went perfectly...to think we had no light for over a year...and for 15 bucks...bam! Have another fan in the den, so I'm ready. It flickers occasionally. Sunlite doesn't have the 40K, so I went with the 88480...50K...needed more light anyhow. Thanks for the grounding wire tip. One screw lined up as you said and I drilled a hole for the other tapping screw to hold down the LED unit perfectly. Side note... working above my head is not that easy anymore...lol...so I cut off the plastic connectors from the original, leaving 2" of wire where I cut, and did a wire nut splice on the new LED wires... and only had to reconnect like the original way in the fan housing...white to white, as you said! Thanks again👍 CHEERS

Thanks for the video. It’s unfortunate that these Chinese light discs don’t like more than a year or two (for me)…backward progress vs normal bulbs or even old incandescents.

Thanks. This was very useful. It would be interesting to buy a bulb light from the hardware store, take out the led out of that, and then putting that in a fan.

Thank you! I plan on doing this to my harbor breeze ceiling fan also. Our house got struck by lightning and every single led in the house burnt out.

How do I remove the LED light from the circular metal plate? It’s screwed to the plate under the light. I can’t remove it.
