On a breezy morning at Academy of Creative Education, families stopped by with balloons, flowers, and of course masks, to celebrate the graduating class of 2020.

“It was really nerve-wracking,” 18-year-old Madison Thomas said.

Madison, a senior at ACE was excited, yet nervous for her big day.

“When I made it on the stage, I just wanted to cry because it’s such a big deal. I can’t believe I made it here,” she said.

With only a few seats up front, hand-sanitizing tables, and social distancing areas in the now empty classrooms, it wasn’t your typical graduation ceremony.

For mom Heather LeRow, the effort it took to make this day happen meant a lot.

“I think that’s just a big milestone for kids; they need it,” she said.

LeRow said Madison went through some tough times so being able to go to ACE was a positive experience for her.

She said this was a great way to end the year.

“I think it was a strong finish for her. She actually was enjoying school. It’s unfortunate about COVID-19 but even still, her teachers all still stayed in touch with her. It meant a lot to her that they were there for her,” LeRow explained.

“I got the opportunity to go to ACE and it changed my whole perspective on schools. Everyone is really supportive and they do everything in power to help you get to where you need to be,” Madison added.

With her graduation cap decorated with the words, ‘To be continued,’ she’s excited for what lies ahead.

“I’m actually going to Palo Alto College to be an esthetician. I got two years free through the Alamo Colleges Promise Program and I’m really excited and start in August,” Madison said.

With tears in her eyes, LeRow said she is so proud of what her daughter has achieved.

“It was a tough road getting here. I’m so thankful that she was able to go to school here,” LeRow said.
