A real Tesla Model Y rival? Toyota bZ4X 2024 review: FWD | New electric SUV gets family tested

The 2024 Toyota bZ4X is clearly expected to sell well by the Japanese brand, with its Australian marketing campaign built around fictitious owners who bought an example of the first-ever electric car "because it's a Toyota". Point being, the carmaker is betting big on buyers flocking to this EV due to the badge on its bonnet – but will they?

The bZ4X certainly has a lot going for it, but that doesn't mean it necessarily has what it takes to put the pressure on the best-selling zero-emissions mid-size SUV, the dominant Tesla Model Y. In fact, to get this far, Toyota had to team up with Subaru, which has it's owned version called the Solterra.

So, in this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Emily Agar and her family of three spend a week living with the new bZ4X's entry-level FWD variant (something the AWD-only Solterra doesn't offer) to find out just how well it measures up against its stiff competition.

I’ve had my BZ for over 18 months now and am overall satisfied. If you have a level 2 charger at home and drive primarily in the city, it’s a great car.

Excellent review, insightful, comprehensive and conversational. The Toyota seems competent, but a bit boring. I'm still a big fan of the Tesla Model Y 😎

You must be joking...the Tesla is a far superior car with a significantly better range.
