New Tesla Model Y v used X ?Comparing efficiency, range, charging & practicality. Which do I prefer?

Used a Model X or new Model Y?

This is a simple vlog but as I’m driving a Tesla model Y and X back to back let me share some thoughts on the pros and cons of each.

I can compare directly the efficiency and what the real world range is too. Considering the model X is 6 years old with 76k how does it fare?

Reality is that the values of each are not too dissimilar so which is the best to get?

Certainly if you need more then 5 seats it has to be the Model X. We only get 5 seat Y’s here but I’ve tried a 7 seater in US and it was laughably small. The X has more space, frunk is bigger and it comes with things like the power doors, air suspension and the big pano windscreen.

The Y is great for efficiency and charging.

Which do you prefer? My thoughts are in this video.

Thanks for watching!

I took my Model X to get serviced and they gave me a Y for loaner and when I got back in my Model X it just made me realized how much I missed my X, so I would have to say I prefer the X over the Y…

I put on 100, 000 miles on my Performance Model X and it is in the shop and I was given a Model Y Dual Motor. I put on 1, 500 miles on the loaner and I have to say - the Y has some really nice upgrades like the screen is super nice and the regen braking seems to be stronger in the Y. But the rest of the stuff - the X just demolishes. I don't like how so much of the screen has the FSD and other menus on top of the navigation map. And even though the Y is quick - the X Performance (and of course Plaid) is brutal. So much fun. And little things like the high beams coming back on. The X has this nice graduation of the low to high... the Y is just one or off. And of course the air suspension and the falcon wing doors.... AND... those automatic doors on the X are SOOOO nice. One doesn't know how awesome they are until you don't have them.

I own 2018 X with Free SuC. 65k km. No issues outside of the half shafts which need periodic replacement. I also have on order YP. X will stay with me forever. I did tripa across Europe and it’s the best car to such trips in. Love white interior and 6 seat configuration. Y is great but simply a class below.

It's nice to see we are now at the point where someone can say in all seriousness "these are only 150kW chargers.."

2019 X to 2022 Y here.

Really miss the automatic front doors on the X, and the comfortable air suspension! Do NOT miss the falcon-wing rear doors. Found those to be a hassle and clumsy and cumbersome. They whacked things in the garage a couple times.

On the Y I LOVE the big glass roof, normal sun visors, normal windshield. One of the biggest things though, to me, is now I can have a roof rack to carry things! Also love the hidden and more effective dash and vents. The Y also feels more futuristic and open to me.

Best demo for us that are 6ft. Thank you! Most videos just don't display how 6ft+ people fit in cars.

I changed from the model x to the y and I'm quite happy about it. As most of my charging is done at home, the free supercharger is actually not interesting compared to the better efficiency of the y. In terms of booth space the y is also more practical than my x 7 seater version, where the size of the booth was limited by the second seat row. My model y is a performance version and I replaced the 21 inches rims with 19 inches rim, which now makes the ride comfort and efficiency even better. All in all I am very happy with the change. Of course the x has some advantages, it remains more comfortable, the driver screen is great and the seven seats come in handy in some situations, but it doesn't compensate the advantages of the y wich I enjoy each time I am driving it. It's more narrow, more efficient, more practical

I took delivery of my Model Y with 19-inch wheels last week, and I agree the ride quality has significantly improved compared with the test Model Y I drove back in February. I also like the new parcel shelf and note Tesla have gone from saying you shouldn't use a tire repair kit to now selling one as an accessory in the Tesla shop. I can't comment on the Model X as I have never driven one, but I prefer my new Model Y to previously owned Hyundai Kona EV and BMW X3. The Model Y feels very sturdy and solid to drive and reminds me of an older Mercedes E Class (pre plastic chrome bling era) I owned, but the Y has much better performance and handling!

Trust me, you always want to go for the new model Y. The model Y will have a warranty you have the newest technology it's quicker has a heat pump inside of it so it will actually get the advertised range when it's cold out. The list can go on forever. The only downside of the model Y is he don't have as much space as the model X. There is lotta good competition out there that has the size of the model X but your paint new model X prices.

Love the video!

Greetings from Aix-en-Provence France. Again a excellent video.
I Would love the Model X but really can't justify the price, in Feb 22 I bought the basic Model 3 at 36k euros after the ecological grant.
Really loved the car but really missed the practicality of my old Honda CRV and so sold the Model 3 for 48k euros and have now ordered the model Y rwd which in France after the ecological grant costs just 45k euros so altogether very happy with that deal.
I have driven every electric suv currently on sale in France of which there are many, but after owning a Tesla for 6 months with all it's equipment every other manufacturer seemed to be playing catch up so I can honestly say that absolutely nothing comes close to the standard range model Y for value for money right now at least here in France as to get even close to the Y every other comparable ev optioned up was at least 10k more expensive and even with the incredible ecological grant's here in France I couldn't justify 10k more for a car with clearly inferior software and of course the Tesla supercharging network is the icing on the cake for me.
Thanks again for the great video content as it was you that originally convinced me that the Tesla was the way to go getting my first ev.👍

I recently bought a used Model X after driving a Model 3 since 2020. I love my M3 but you really hit the nail on the head with regards to the X. Six figure odometer readings don't mean the same with EVs. They seem to be underpriced IMO. Cheers.

I want a Y with air suspension and cooled seats, or an X with 4 normal doors.

Great road test - Thanks!
The X seems to have a bit of road/tire noise by comparison, but I can see the extra smoothness in the ride from the air suspension. Your road tests are very well done and seem to address most all my questions.

Super helpful no-nonsense video that's helping me make a decision of used X or Y (family of 5, with tall kids)

Thanks for another great video!

We have a MX 2019 100D and love it more than any other car. Our efficiency is 210 wh/km over its 50k km of driving. I mainly try to drive as efficiently as possible, without rapid acceleration and use regenerative braking 95% of the time to slow down.

My wife and I took a test drive in the 2022 MYSR twice, and the M3LR twice (both on order).

Both M3 and MY were super comfortable but the M3 had a much lower ride position compared to the MX. The MY ride height was 10% lower than the MX, so it wasn’t as big a difference.

The M3, bring smaller, handled extremely well and was nimble … like the MX. Road noise in the MY was surprisingly better than on your previous reviews.

I agree that the MX was cozier and more luxurious than the new M3 and MY, which on the plus side, have their impressive minimalistic design.

On both MYSR test drives, my ears felt pressure & wanted to “pop” (like when rapidly ascending in a lift or in a plane), even when the car was stationary.

My wife felt slightly nauseas in the MY. We don’t understand why, but need new EVs to replace the hybrids, so we are still going ahead with our M3 and MY purchases.

No way in the foreseeable future are we selling the MX … 🙂.

We have both the X (June 18) and Y (June 22), the X is my car and the Y my wife’s, but I do get to drive both, often in one day. The Y is a lovely car and a joy to drive, but the X feels more refined and is definitely smoother on rough roads. When we are out as a family, my wife prefers travelling with our son in the back in the X and of course on long journeys requiring supercharging we always use the X for the free supercharging which has saved me a good amount in 96k miles driving. For quality, the Y has been perfect straight from new with to date no issues, not even a panel gap. The X does have panel gaps, but those don’t worry me, and reliability wise has been pretty good. Only notable problems, the AC failed couple years ago, but that was covered by warranty, while more recently the power steering failed, but Tesla fixed that in under 3 hours the next working day, at a cost of about £200 which is not bad for maintenance costs on a 4-year old car. The X is heavy on tyres, needing replacing about every 20k miles. Don’t know yet for the Y. Both are fantastic cars and I love them both!
